Monaghan 2-8 Meath 1-10
The stage was set for the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Cup Final in Millbrook, Oldcastle on Sunday evening with the singing of our National Anthem by Ann Galligan, and a large crowd in attendance awaiting a great encounter despite all the heavy rain of the day. Monaghan all out to win the Cup for the first time and Meath out to bridge a 10 year gap since their last win.

A dream start by Monaghan scoring 2-2 without reply laid the foundation for their victory, who adapted much better to the wet conditions. David Irwin’s opening point for followed up by his goal could not have been what Monaghan expected at this early stage. Meath were unlucky with their first attempt of a score coming off the post.
Sean Jones got Monaghan’s second goal after a mishit free followed up with a Donnach Swinburne point to have Monaghan up by 8 points.

Luke Mitchell opened Meath’s account from a free on 14 minutes. Monaghan responded with a point at the other end, which turned out to be their last score of the half.
Meath were now coming more into the game and added 3 points to their tally, including 2 points from Luke Mitchell (1f) to leave 5 points between the sides at the break.

H/T: Monaghan 2-3 Meath 0-4

Mitchell hit the opening score of the second half, also from a free, but Monaghan stretched their lead 2-6 to 0-5 following a trio of points from the impressive Aaron Mulligan. Meath were unlucky with Luke Kelly’s shot on goal going wide off the post in this spell.
Points from Oisin McCloskey and Luke Mitchell (f) narrowed the gap between the sides. Luke Kelly’s brilliantly taken goal on 46 minutes had Meath back in with a great chance of winning.
Crucially Monaghan replied to that score with a point from Mulligan (f) who accounted for all of his sides second half tally.,
Substitute Ian Birmingham reduced the deficit on 49 minutes. Meath had a goal chance soon after, but the lead was back to three after Mulligan hit his sides final score in the 53rd minute. Meath at this stage were looking for goals, and as it turned out, points would have been sufficient to at least force a draw.
Meath had momentum with them in the closing stages and had late points from Mitchell (free) and Colin Hawdon, but they were unable to force an equaliser as Monaghan held on for their first Gerry Reilly Cup win.

Dublin 3-11 Laois 1-6
In the opening minutes of the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Plate Final played on Saturday evening, it looked like Laois were going to put it up to Dublin. However, when Dublin’s Simon Murphy pointed from a free in the 4th minute, Dublin started to dominate play. Showers during the game and all the earlier heavy rain did not make it easy for either team.

Matt Grogan found the Laois net for Dublin’s first goal after a pass in from Conor Hennessy. Thomas O’Neill added to Dublin’s tally with a fine point, before Laois’s, Sean Michael Corcoran attempt on goal was saved by Dublin’s ‘keeper, Simon Murphy.
Dublin had balls twice off the woodwork before Ciaran McManus got Dublin’s second goal after a fine run from the middle of the field. Dublin went on to add 4 points to their score and were completely on top.
Laois got their first score in the 29th minute with a goal finished to the net by Cathal Bennett. Josh Lacey pointed for Laois’s second score just before the break.
H/T: Dublin 2-6 Laois 1-1
Laois did get the first score of the second half with a Mark O’Connell point, but again it was Dublin who were creating the scoring chances. They went on to add four unanswered points from the boots of Ciaran McManus, Cillian Stynes (2), and Denis Smith. They then followed up with their third goal finished to the Laois net by Cillian Stynes.

Laois’s second point of the half came in the 54th minute scored by Trevor Swayne, but by then Dublin were no longer playing with any urgency. Laois did add two converted frees to their tally (Josh Lacey) to another Dublin point (Cillian Stynes) before the final whistle.

Dublin’s, Ciaran McManus was presented with the RESPA ‘Man of the match’ award by Bobby Kellett (Kelletts Oldcastle Ltd)

It was all too easy for Dublin, who had just missed out to making the Cup Final losing to Monaghan by the minimum. They will certainly be strong contenders for next year’s All Ireland U17 Football Championship

Louth 2-14 Longford 1-14
A place in the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Shield Final was at stake in this Rd.3 game played on Saturday evening in Millbrook, Oldcastle. It went right down to the wire with Longford only needing to draw to qualify, but it was Louth’s points in injury time that insured their place in the Shield Final.
Louth were quick off the mark with 4 unanswered points by the 8th minute with two from Patrick Johnston and one a piece by Cathal Fleming and Ryan Walsh. In fact Louth could have been much further ahead by this time having also recorded 4 wides. It did not look good for Longford. When Daniel Reynolds got Longford’s first point in the 13th minute, it changed the whole game. Longford added 3 points to their tally to Louth’s one point y the 18th minute to leave the minimum between the sides. Longford’s Eoghan McCormack finished a great move to the Louth net to give Longford a 2 point lead. Louth had the sides level with points from Daire Nally (f) and Conor Faulkner by the 23rd minute. Longford responded with 2 points from Cian Dooner (1f) only for Louth to get 2 to have the sides level at the break.
H/T: Louth 0-9 Longford 1-6
Louth started brilliantly on the resumption with a Patrick Johnson point and a James McGillick goal.
In fact they could have been much further ahead only for a great save by the Longford ‘keeper, Paddy Murray.
When it looked like Louth were going to take control, Longford had other ideas. They responded with 4 points to have the sides level again, before Aidan O Ceallaigh’s point had them up by one.
Louth’s, Reece Reilly’s goal in the 41st minute turned out to be crucial. They had other goal chances, but the Longford defence were holding strong.
Twice, Longford got to within a point, but it was Louth who finished the strongest into injury time with points from Ryan Walsh (f) and Conor Quigley for a deserved victory.

Louth now play Wicklow in the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Shield Final on Saturday next, 29 July, in Millbrook, Oldcastle at 3.00 pm

Meath 5-18 Laois 1-6
In the second half of the Rd.3 match in the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Meath took complete control in their win over Laois. The game was played on a beautiful Sunday evening in Millbrook, Oldcastle, with a large crowd in attendance basking in the sunshine.
Meath had a dream start with points from Darragh Swaine, Bryan McCormack, and Luke Mitchell (2f) before Darragh Swaine got Meath’s first goal in the 9th minute. Adam Treanor pointed for Meath to lead 1-5 to 0-0 before Ross Bolger pointed for Laois from a free.
Laois were getting back into the game and were rewarded with a great goal by Seamus Farrelly. Sean Michael Corcoran got 2 points to leave just two between the sides and it looked like Laois were going to make a real battle of it. However it was Meath who finished the half the strongest with 3 unanswered points (including 2 frees)
H/T: Meath 1-8 Laois 1-3
On the restart, Laois had a great chance of a goal only to be denied by a great save by Meath ‘keeper, Sam Coughlan. Luke Mitchell’s goal put Meath back in the driving seat and they went on to add seven points to their tally to a pointed free for Laois in this period.
Meath were creating all the chances that included 2 Brian O’Hanlon goals. There was no stopping Meath now. They know that they’ll have a tough task on hand when they play Monaghan in the Cup Final in a fortnight. It will be a game not to be missed!

Laois never gave up, despite the scoreline, and they now play Dublin in the Plate Final.

Dublin 4-17 Wicklow 0-10
It was very much a game of 2 halves with the strong wind on the day, Wicklow were playing with the wind in their backs for the first half of the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Rd.3 game played on Saturday afternoon in Millbrook, Oldcastle and by the 21st minute, they led by 7 points (0-9 to 0-2).
Ruari Tompkins (related to Larry Tompkins) pointed for Wicklow in the first minute. Denis Smith got the equaliser for Dublin. Ruari Tompkins regained the lead with his second point only to be matched again by Dublin after a great move down the field. While Wicklow recorded 7 unanswered points next, Dublin were creating chances and were twice thwarted by the Wicklow ‘keeper.
H/T: Wicklow 0-10 Dublin 0-5
The second half was all Dublin and, who were now playing with the wind. They had moved up a gear and Matt Grogan’s goal gave them the lead for the first time (1-8 to 0-10). Denis Smith quickly followed up with Dublin’s second goal and there was going to be no way back for Wicklow.
Dublin kept on putting pressure on Wicklow while adding to their tally that included an own goal by Wicklow. They were simply too good for Wicklow in the second half and who were held scoreless by Dublin .

Monaghan had to dig deep to overcome Westmeath in the dying moments of the 3rd round tie of the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT played in Millbrook, Oldcastle on Saturday. Hot favourites, Monaghan, certainly had it put up to them and it’s Westmeath that had far more scoring chances.
Westmeath had the wind advantage in the first half and within seconds of the start had their first point from Kevin O’Sullivan and followed up with a goal chance wide of the upright. Jamie Evans added another point before Enda Gaffney’ goal had Westmeath leading by 1-2 to 0-0. Indeed Westmeath had more great chances of scores , but they were off target with poor shots. Jordan McGarrell’s goal brought Monaghan back into the game, but again Westmeath’s shooting was letting them down. They had 7 wides to none for Monaghan before Shane Fleming pointed to have Westmeath up by 3 points at this stage. Three successive Monaghan points (Lochlain Power, David Irwin & Jordan McGarrell) by the 21st minute had the sides level. Westmeath regained the lead with a Shane Fleming point and the followed up quickly with a Oisin Raleigh point (f) and a goal.
Lochlainn Power’s goal in the 24th minute gave life back to Monaghan, but it was Westmeath’s Jamie Evans that pointed for the last score of the half.
H/T: Westmeath 2-6 Monaghan 2-3
If anything, the wind seemed to get stronger in the second half, however Monaghan had the sides level again by the 34th minute with successive points. Westmeath’s Shane Fleming’s converted free put them ahead again, however they again filed to convert other chances. Monaghan were beginning to do the same with their chances, however Conor Smith got the equaliser . Shane Fleming, who was having a star game for Westmeath, converted 2 frees to regain the lead by the 52nd minute.
Monaghan substitute, Ronan Grimes, had a big influence when introduced and his point had the sides level for the 4th time. He was instrumental in Nathan Power’s goal that was to give victory to Monaghan. Westmeath did not give up and in injury time had 2 attempts on the Monaghan goal, but Monaghan’s defence held out.
Monaghan will now play either Laois or Meath (who play on Sunday evening, 16 July) in the Gerry Reilly Cup Final

Monaghan 0-10 Dublin 0-9
A pity the rain came to make conditions tough for both teams, but that did not prevent all in attendance seeing an incredible game of football that went down to the wire. It was Monaghan that held out in the end to claim victory over Dublin in this 2nd round game of the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT played in Millbrook, Oldcastle on Sunday evening.
Dublin had the wind in the first half, but it was Monaghan who had the dream start with 3 unanswered points from Donnach Swinburne, and Sean Jones. By the15th minute, Dublin had the sides level with 2 Mark O’Leary converted pointed frees and Thomas O’Neill point. Donnach Swinburne regained the lead for Monaghan. On the 30th minute a Mark O’Leary point from a free had the sides level Well into injury time. Alex O’Neill regained the lead with a fine point. Dublin ended the half with 6 wides to Monaghan’s 2 wides.
H/T: Dublin 0-5 Monaghan 0-4
On the restart Dublin substitute, Rory Whelan stretched their lead, only for Monaghan to reply with 2 points to have the sides level for the 3rd time. The game was been played with great intensity and commitment for both sides and a treasure to witness. The sides were to be level a 4th time after 2 Monaghan points saw Dublin scoring 2 points.
Dublin’s ‘keeper brought off a great save on Monaghan’s goal attempt which eventually saw Donnach Swinburne get a point to put Monaghan ahead again. Dublin’s Mark Lavin pointed to have the sides level once more. Donnach Swinburne pointed in the 53rd minute to put Monaghan ahead by the minimum.
It was ‘end to end’ stuff with both sides failing to convert many chances and with no quarter given by the defences.
What a game and many ways a pity there had to be a loser, but overall Monaghan deserved their victory.

Monaghan’s, Arron Mulligan, was presented with the RESPA ‘Man of the match’ award by Dermot Monaghan (Secretary, Oldcastle GFC)

Wicklow 7-12 Westmeath 3-5
Wicklow were simply on fire in their win over Westmeath in the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT played in Millbrook, Oldcastle on Sunday afternoon.
They had wind advantage in the first half and made quick use of it by scoring a goal and 3 points by the third minute. Ruari Tompkins point was quickly followed up with a goal and a point(f) by Eoin Darcy. Wicklow had extended their lead to 8 points before Westmeath’s Shane Fleming pointed in the 9th minute. It was all Wicklow now and 2 goals scored by Eoin Darcy (one a penalty) was making it very difficult to get back into the game.
H/T: Wicklow 3-8 Westmeath 0-3
On the resumption Westmeath’s Oisin Raleigh got the opening score and it looked as the start of a fight back. However goals converted by Charlie Drumm, Evan Connell and Shane Fleming was putting the game way out of Westmeath’s reach.
To their credit, Westmeath did not give up and went on to get 2 goals before Wicklow got their 7th goal.
