Meath 2-11 Dublin 2-10

The Briody Bedding Sponsored Gerry Reilly Leinster U16
Cup Final played in Millbrook, Oldcastle on Sunday evening had the large crowd
held in suspense right to the final whistle. Meath prevailed coming out on top with the
minimum between the sides at the final whistle. 18 teams set out in June in
June with the aim of lifting the Cup and the game was a fitting finale to this
year’s tournament.

Dublin’s Oisin Grady opened the scoring with 2 points.
Meath had their chance of a score with a shot on goal pushed out for a 45,
which was not converted. There was little to choose between the teams
throughout the opening quarter with Dublin ahead on three separate occasions.

Meath led for the first time after Dublin keeper Sean
Downey failed to hold a speculative effort from midfielder Conor Gray in the
damp conditions and Alan Bowden finished to the Dublin net. Meath went on to
add 2 points to their tally to Dublin’s single point before the break.

H/T: Meath 1-5 Dublin 0-5

Whatever went on in
the dressing room at the break had Dublin coming out upping their game and put the Meath defence under severe
pressure. Three Dublin
unanswered points had the sides level which included a Conor Dolan point from a free and a Matthew Lynch converted ’45.

However Meath hopes were boosted when Alan Bowden got
his second goal to leave it 2-5 to 0-8.

Conor Dolan converted
another free for the Dubs before two quick-fire points from Eoghan Frayne had Meath back in the ascendancy.

It didn’t take Dublin long to get back in contention and a brilliantly
taken goal from Seamus Smith had them just a point in arrears.

Meath’s Adam McDonnell set up
substitute Ruairi Kinsella for a Meath point on 55 minutes and then added one
himself in response to another Dolan effort.

2 superbly-struck points from placed balls (1f & a
45) by Eoghan Frayne in the closing stages proved crucial for Meath. Dublin responded with
a goal from substitute Luke Breathnach to cut the deficit to the minimum in injury time. Meath won possession from the kickout
and responded by going down the field again just before the final whistle, but Luke Caffrey’s shot was wide of the post.

Down 3-11 Cill Dara 1-14 (AET)

What a dramatic end to the Gerry Reilly Leinster U16 Plate Final played in Millbrook, Oldcastle this evening (17 August 2019) which saw Down overcoming Cill Dara in extra time to lift the Plate Trophy. It looked like we were in for a penalty shootout to separate the sides after it looked as if Cill Dara had equalised with a fine goal. However this was disallowed as Cill Dara had replaced a black card sending off too soon.

Playing against a strong wind, Down opened the scoring with a James Duggan goal after a mix up in the Cill Dara square. Cill Dara points from Oisin O’Sullivan, Adam Fanning (f) and Cian Grimes had the sides level. Points were being traded before Cill Dara took the lead for the first time at 0-6 to 1-2. But Down regained the lead with a fantastic Jamie Cahill point and an Oisin Savage free. Again points were traded before a terrific pass from Cill Dara’s Adam Fanning to Shane Farrell was finished to the Down net put them up by 3 points.

H/T: Cill Dara 1-9 Down 1-6

Down’s Oisin savage converted a penalty for their second goal after what might have been a penalty at the other end to have the sides level. Again like in the first half, there was nothing between the sides with points being traded with each other and everyone on the field giving their all. A nail biting finish saw Down’s Jason Morgan’s point give them the lead in injury time only to be matched by Cian Grime’s converted free to draw the sides level as time expired.
Extra time (with 5 minutes per half) saw down scoring the crucial score, an Oisin Savage goal, in the opening minute of extra time. Cill Dara missed an opportunity to score from a 45, but chances were few for both sides with the defences holding out.
Then in the second half, while Down had one shot wide of the target, Cill Dara thought that it was going end with a penalty shoot out only to be denied by a disallowed goal.

Laois 2-8 Wicklow 0-7
Laois claimed victory in the Gerry Reilly Leinster U16 Shield Final played in Millbrook, Oldcastle on Saturday afternoon with a blitz in the last quarter which saw them score 2 crucial goals.
Laois had the strong wind advange in the first half, but it was Wicklow had the first scoring chance when their goal attempt was deflected for a 45. Laois got the first score when Colin Dunne pointed. Joe Mills equalised for Wicklow, But Colin Dunne put Laois ahead with 2 points(1f). Wicklow’s, Joe Mills second point before DJ White pointed from a free to leave 2 between the sides at the break
H/T: Laois 04 Wicklow 0-2
Wicklow now had the wind and went on to lead for the first time with 4 points added to Laois’s single point.
But then when Colin Dunne got Laois’s first goal in the final quarter, they got on top and Wicklow seemed to tire. Wicklow never gave up, but the result was put beyond any doubt with Adam Burns second goal for Laois as time ran out.

Meath 4-17 Cill Dara 0-15
After a beautiful day, the rain came just at the wrong time for the Briody Sponsored Gerry Reilly Leinster U16 Cup Semi-Final played in Oldcastle on Sunday evening. The weather did not take away from a keenly fought encounter, with a place in the Cup final at stake.
It was Meath that made a great start with points from Eoghan Frayne (f) and Adam McDonnell. Oisin Tighe pointed for Cill Dara before Ciaran Caulfield got Meath’s first goal. Meath went on to lead at the break by 1-9 to 0-5.
Cill Dara upped their game on the restart with 3 unanswered points (Shane Farrell & Adam Fanning (2)) They were exerting a lot of pressure on Meath, but Meath then reeled off 4 points to stretch their lead again.
2 Meath goals in quick succession (Alan Bowden & Aaron Murphy) gave them a lead of 3-13 to 0-11 at this stage.
Cill Dara were thwarted by 2 incredible saves by the Meath ‘keeper, Adam Niven that otherwise would have made the result much closer in the end.

Dublin 5-8 Down 3-13

We were treated to a cracker of a game in this Briody Sponsored Gerry Reilly Leinster U16 Cup Semifinal played in Millbrook, Oldcastle this afternoon.

The sides were level at the break with Dublin’s 1-3 to Down’s 0-6.

Dublin had raced into a 9 point lead early in the second
half. But then Down got back to within a point before Dublin pulled away again
after Eoin Wilde goaled from the rebound of his penalty attempt.

Down then took the lead by a point (which included scores from James Duggan – a goal ad Zach Murdock – a point). It looked very like extra time and even a penalty shoot out for a result, but it was Dublin that got the last 2 points just to edge it in the end.

Meath 4-18 Wexford
4-8

Wexford
were first off the mark in this Gerry Reilly Leinster U16 Cup Q/Final played in
Millbrook, Oldcastle on Saturday afternoon with a Liam Doyle converted free for
a point. 2 points from frees by Eoghan Frayne put Meath ahead. They could have
been further ahead, but Ruari Kinsella’s penalty kick was wide of the post
after a foul on Eoghan Frayne.

At
the other end, a Wexford goal attempt was wide of the target before they
regained the lead with a point and a goal.
It was nip and tuck between the sides with both sides creating scoring
chances. The sides were level on 2 more occasions before the break with some
great goals from both sides. Wexford showed great determination and might have
considered themselves to be unlucky not to be ahead at the break.

H/T: Meath 3-6
Wexford 3-4

Meath
upped their game on the restart with 6 unanswered points from play to lead by 8
points. Wexford never gave up and while
they got their 4th goal, the result was never in doubt. Cian Smyth’s 4th goal for Meath
and Eoghan Frayne’s converted free for a point were the final scores of a most
entertaining game. Credit to both teams.

Kildare were completely on top in the first half of the Briody Sponsored Gerry Reilly Leinster U16 Q/Final played in Millbrook, Oldcastle on Saturday afternoon They had 7 points on the board before Offaly’s opening score. A bad kickout resulted in Daniel Farrell getting Kildare’s first goal.

Kildare
again dominated on the restart and stretched their lead to 13 points. Offaly
had 2 unanswered points before Keith O’Neill got their first goal. Offaly. It
was the tonic that Offaly needed as they began to believe in themselves. Cormac
Egan’s goal left 6 points between the sides, but Kildare went further ahead
again with a point and a goal from Óisin Tighe. It looked all over for Offaly,
but they finished with a flourish with 3 goals before time ran out on them.
What a fight back and they just came up short.

Down 5-18
Louth 1-6

Down put in a masterful display in their win over Louth in the first of the Gerry Reilly Leinster U16 Cup Quarter Finals played this evening (Friday, 26 July)in Millbrook, Oldcastle. Down were 5 points up before Louth’s first point. Louth narrowed the gap with a converted free from Danny Reilly. But then Down really took control with adding 2-5 to Louth’s 0-1 before the break.. There were some terrific scores including a great move by Oisin Savage which resulted with Michael McNeill finishing to the net for Down’s first goal

H/T: Down 2-10 Louth 0-3

Louth got the opening score of the half after Danny Reilly found
the Down net from a rebound of the post. However from then on no matter how
hard Louth tried, Down were unstoppable.

Down certainly have to be considered as favourites to lift the Cup
this year. They now play Dublin in the semi-final and that’s a game to look
forward to and not to be missed.
