What a game the large and enthusiastic crowd were treated to in the Gerry Reilly Leinster U16 FT Cup Final played in Millbrook, Oldcastle on Sunday evening. The stage was set for a thrilling final and that’s what we got.

Cavan’s Daryl McGurren got the opening score with a lovely point. Meath’s Cillian Hegarty pointed for Meath and Niall Finnerty and Barry Thompson followed up with pointed frees to put Meath ahead. Meath had the advantage of the wind, but Cavan were putting a lot of pressure on the Meath backs. Points from Daryl McGurren and Finntan O’Reilly (f) had the sides level again at 0-3 each.

In the 18th minute Niall Finnerty pointed from a free to put Meath up again. Meath were creating goal chances, but were thwarted by great saves from Cavan’s ‘keeper, Brian O’Rourke’ The crucial score of the half was Evan Corrigan’s goal that stretched Meath’s lead, which helped them lead by 6 points at the break.

H/T: Meath 1-7 Cavan 0-4

A super goal to the Meath net by Finntan O’Reilly brought Cavan right back into it. It was nip and tuck between the sides with movements from one end of the field to the other at terrific pace.

It was Evan Corrigan’s second goal to give Meath the lead at 2-9 to 1-7 that gave Meath the initiative at this stage. Cavan never gave up and were putting a lot of pressure on the Meath backs. They did get the last 4 points to close the gap, but failed to get a needed goal to increase the pressure on Meath.

The game was a tribute to both sides and played at a hectic pace and great commitment and skill on display.

Congratulations to all the participants from Meath & Cavan that took part in the Half Time Mini Games with U7’s and U8’s games.
Louth 1-18 Longford 2-6

A terrific second half display saw Louth powering to victory over Longford in the Gerry Reilly Leinster U16 FT Plate Final played in Millbrook, Oldcastle on Saturday evening. Conditions were not easy with light rain and gusty wind at times through out, but despite that we were treated to a great game of football.
Longford made a great start and were 3 points up (Jack Finn & Jack Duggan,2f) before Louth’s opening score in the 6th minute from Tom Grey. Louth took the lead by the 15th minute with points from Ben Collier(2) & Craig Shevlin. Louth led by 0-6 to 0-4 before Aaron Smyth’s goal regained the lead for Longford. Points were exchanged before the half to have Longford leading at the break by 1-5 to 0-7.

Louth had a dream start to the second half with 4 unanswered points before Longford’s Ronan Sheehan’s point. Louth had a stronger blustery wind advantage now and went on to lead by 1-15 to 1-6, which included Conall McCaul’s goal in the 40th minute.
Longford did have chances at this stage , but were off target with their attempts on goal. When Cathal Gilligan got Longford’s second goal it lifted their hopes, but the Louth defence held strong.
Louth responded with 3 points from Tom Grey (1f) to give Louth a deserved victory.

Louth’s Captain, Conall McCaul was presented with the ‘Man of the match’ award for his outstanding game by Martin Briody (Briody Bedding Limited – Sponsor).

Meath got off to a flyer in the Gerry Reilly Leinster U16 FT Semi-Final played on Sunday evening in Millbrook, Oldcastle. Almost from the throw in, Niall Finnerty’s great pass to Barry Thompson who finished to the net for Meath’s first goal. Another pass from Niall Finnerty saw Evan Corrigan get Meath’s second goal in the 3rd minute. Conall McCaul got Louth’s opening scores (2 pts), but were trailing Meath by 8 pts at the 9th minute. Louth at this stage were creating chances but had a great attempt at goal saved by the Meath ‘keeper, Dean Pluck. Almost straight after, Barry Thompson got Meath’s 3rd goal Meath went on to lead at the break by 3-8 to 0-6.

Louth had reduced the deficit with a Luke Matthews goal to trail 3-10 to 1-9 in the second half.. They did have a goal attempt off target soon after that which could have reduced the arrears further. Louth never gave up, but Meath finished strongly with 2 Niall Finnerty Goals.

We were treated to a thriller in the first of the Gerry Reilly Leinster U16 FT Semi-Finals played on Sunday evening in Millbrook, Oldcastle. Longford had 3 points (2 from play) on the scoreboard before they got their first point from a free. Cavan were creating goal chances but were denied by Longford ‘keeper, Conor Kelly. Jack Duggan’s goal for Longford had them leading by 1-4 to 0-4. Cavan were down to 14 after a red card and they were facing an uphill battle. Despite this, they continued to create chances. Cavan’s 4 unanswered points had the sides level at the break on a scoreline of Cavan 0-10 to Longford’s 1-7.

On the resumption points were exchanged on two occasions before Darryl McGurren pointed to give Cavan the lead for the first time, which they never relinquished. Cavan stretched their lead to 3 points, but Longford were not giving up and reduced the margin to a single point. Longford did have a great goal chance, but the shot sailed over the bar. The heavens opened with torrential rain making play more difficult. Nikodim McKiernan’s goal deep into injury time insured victory for Cavan. Credit to both teams for a great game of football.

Cavan 6-15 Dublin 1-17
The first half of the Gerry Reilly Leinster U16 FT Quarter Final played on Sunday evening in Oldcastle was end to end play with both sides creating great scores. Dublin were on the board first with a Sean Kinsella point and saw their attempt on goal come off the crossbar. Cavan responded with 4 points (2 from Caoimhin McGovern & 2 from Finntan O’Reilly) on the trot by the 6th minute. Then it was Dublin’s turn with 5 unanswered points. Cavan in turn regained the lead with 5 points on the trot. Cavan had a great goal chance that was blocked in the goalmouth. Dublin broke away with a terrific run by Conor Archer, who passed to Ryan O’Dwyer to blast to the Cavan net to have the sides level for the 4th time in the half
A Dublin point from a free just before the break gave them the lead at the break on a score line of 1-7 to 0-9

Dublin had extended their lead early in the second half to 3 points, but a beautiful Cavan move that was finished to the Dublin net by Darryl McGurren brought the sides level again. Goals win matches and Cavan were on fire (No doubt boosted by their half time talk) and it was now all Cavan who added 4 goals to their tally by the 50th minute. It was all over as a contest this stage, though Dublin never gave up.

Cavan’s Evan Kelly was presented with the ‘Man of the match award by Martin Blake (Briody Bedding Limited – Sponsor)

Meath went on to lead at the break by 0-9 to 1-4.
Meath upped a gear in the second half and added 8 points to their tally to Wicklow’s single point in the same period. This raised Longford’s spirits and they recorded 3 unanswered points to leave 2 points between the sides. John McGovern pointed to extend Down’s lead again as full time approached, but all the pressure now was coming from Longford, which resulted with a Cathal Gilligan’s goal to have the sides level.

Extra time loomed , but it was Longford that produced the dramatic end with a point and the sealing victory goal by Jack Duggan ( after a pass from ‘Man of the match’ Keelan McGann).

Down had led at the break by 0-7 to 0-5 and could have been much further ahead but for the Longford ‘keeper, Conor Skelly, with some terrific saves.

When Louth’s, Ben Smyth got their first goal in the 15th minute of the Gerry Reilly Leinster U16 FT Quarter Final played in Oldcastle this morning (11 August), they were really putting it up to Carlow. H/T: Louth 1-7 Carlow 0-6
Louth now had the wind advantage in the second half. Tadgh Donnelly’s goal after a terrific move from down the field made it an uphill battle for Carlow and there was no way back for them. It was a great game played at pace and commitment from both teams.
