Oldcastle dominate Meath Scór!

The Meath Scór Finals took place yesterday evening (28/2/2020), and Oldcastle were delighted to have competitors in four of the five categories, Solo Singing, Recitation, Sketch and Set Dancing.

Annie Galligan was our representative in both the singing and recitation, and was up against stiff competition, with past Leinster and All-Ireland winners up against her. A beautiful rendition of “A Song for Ireland” was followed by a moving account of an eviction in the recitation.

Next up was Oldcastle’s first entry in a sketch act, an hilarious depiction of an eventful day for the policeman and garda on duty at the border. Jim Connell, Pat Grey, Dermot Monaghan, Shane Browne, Seamus Maxwell, Annie Galligan and Ealma Purcell put on a great performance, but were also up against stiff competition from former winner

Finally our Set Dancers took to the stage: Mary Hetherton, Julieanne Walsh, Sinead Hetherton, Sinead Rahill, Lolita Fitzsimons Black, Mary Smith, Michelle Smith and Claire Brady put on a beautiful performance of the Cashel Set 1 and 4. Coached by Kenny Murphy and slowly coming together over the past few months, the last members of this group only joined in the past two weeks, but to see them dance you would think they were together for years. Special well done to Mary Hetherton for her determination to get this Set Dancing group up and running.

Finally it was results time! Joseph O’Brien of Meath Scór unleashed a roar of approval when he announced Annie Galligan of An Sean Chaislean as the winner of the Solo Singing! That roar grew louder when soon after he once again announced Annie and Sean Chaislean the winner of the Recitation!

And when he called out An Sean Chaislean as the winners of the sketch it rose another notch! Surely this couldn’t be surpassed – but it could! The winners of the Set Dancing were also An Sean Chaislean!

Four categories entered and four victories, four beautiful Cups that came over the mountain with us last night and will reside here for a year!
Well done to everyone involved for all their hard work over the past weeks and months. What an achievement! You have all proven what can be done when people get together and work together, and the club is very proud to be represented by you. Thanks also to Joe, Cathal, Anna and everyone on the Meath Scór committee who put so much work in.

No rest for the wicked however, with the Leinster Semi-Final coming up next Saturday at 4pm in The Downs, Mullingar. We will meet the County Champions from Longford, Louth, Dublin, Carlow and Westmeath there, in a battle to see who goes forward to the Leinster Finals.

Best of luck also to Kenny Murphy who has done so much for Set Dancing in Oldcastle these past two years. Tonight he dances with his native Bun Brosna in the Westmeath Scór Finals. If they win he will then dance against the Oldcastle lassies he has been training, in next Saturday’s Semi-Final!
Thanks also to the big crowd of supporters who travelled to Gibbstown last night, much appreciated! We hope to see you all again next Saturday in The Downs!
