U-14’s Lazarus-like comeback at Millbrook

Oldcastle 8-07 Bective/Cannistown 6-13
Bective/Cannistown came to Millbrook tonight (Wednesday, 31 May 2017) to win this final Spring League match (Rd.5), and with the aid of a stiff breeze seemed set to do just that, notching up a score of 4-10 to Oldcastle’s 2-03 in the first half, and indeed it would have been worse except for good defensive work from James Tuite and Daren Kavanagh.

As the second-half started the breeze died down, and Bective/Cannistown got the perfect start with another goal. At this point Oldcastle woke-up and got into the match, a Ross McCann goal the catalyst, followed by another superb goal from Eoin Muldoon. Bective/Cannistown retaliated with a goal, but a point from Ross and a nifty goal from J.P. Purcell kept Oldcastle in the match. At this stage it was Bective/C 6-12, Oldcastle 5-04. Matthew Cahill made some fantastic saves in goal, while Eoin Muldoon took another fine goal at the other end. Conor Boylan and Brian Hetherton were playing well, and Kane Cullen was everywhere. Jack Murphy and JP added points, before Eoin added another goal for a hat-trick. With the clock ticking away and everyone’s hearts in their mouths, he shot another in just in time to leave it all square at the final whistle.

A draw was a fair result considering Oldcastle were so far behind with 10 minutes to go, and they showed great determination to comeback. Good performances were given by all the players tonight, at all positions, with Eoin Muldoon playing out of his boots! A semi-final spot in this U-14 Spring League now awaits.
