U-14 Summer FL Play-off No. 1 – Completed and Job Done!
Oldcastle 3-20 St Marys 3-6
The sides met 10 days ago with St Mary’s winning by 6 points, but this time Oldcastle lead from start to finish in a very exciting -14 Summer FL play-off round 1 game played in Millbrook this evening (27 July 2016).
The game was played at a very high tempo and Dj Monaghan opened the scoring within the first minute with a point from a tight angle. Darren Connell grabbed another before the side traded goals with Pearse Sheridan finishing to the net for the home side.
The visitors were finding it hard to break down the Oldcastle defence with Jack Murphy and Conor Boylan both outstanding and stopped a number of attacks. Colin Halpin was moved to midfield and started to gather a lot of ball and this allowed Pearse Sheridan to push forward and add 3 points. Conor Smith was doing a great job man marking the St Marys danger man Jack Hynes. St Mary’s looked certain to add another goal, but Sean Chatten had other ideas and made a fine save. Colin Halpin and Darren Connell added points to leave the half time score Oldcastle 1 -10 St Marys 1-4.
Mark Coyle raced forward and intercepted the ball and coolly slotted over to open the second half scoring. The Oldcastle defence were now on top with each player winning the individual battle against his marker. Conor Boylan and Jack Murphy continued their first half performances and both were excellent throughout. Aaron Ward and Conor Smith were doing well and stopped everything that St Marys could offer. Pearse Sheridan continued to keep the score board ticking over and this was down to the hard work from those around him as JP Purcell, Ryan Kevin and Conor Gibbons got stuck in to gain possession.
St Marys grabbed 2 second half goals, but they could have had more only for Sean Chatten who pulled of a string of fine saves. James Tuite was unlucky not to score when a long into the goal mouth just missed his out stretched hand. Jack Murphy was reward for his great game with a nice point from the left boot. Ryan Kevin wrapped things up with a goal in the closing stages to set up the play-off game Rd.2 v Moynalty \ Carnaross on Friday.
