U-13’s lose out in opening round of the Leinster Cross-County League

Caulry 8-4 Oldcastle 2-9
The U-13s got the season off to a start today (27 Jan.2017) at Millbrook, playing a tough side from Caulry in Westmeath, as part of the Leinster Cross-County League (Group 6). On a bright but bitterly cold afternoon, Rory Crawley got Oldcastle off to a good start with a nicely taken point, with Ryan Kevin adding another from a free soon after.

However Caulry’s response was a powerful goal, stating their intentions. They followed with two more in quick succession, but Oldcastle dug deep and fought back, with Eoin Smith, Paul Hennessy and Rory Crawley taking points. Paul Hennessy was denied a goal by the athletic Caulry goalie who executed a ground roll worthy of James Bond, catching the ball as he did so.

Just into the start of the second half Caulry snatched another goal, but Oldcastle responded with a lovely Lloyd Colleran catch, passed upfield and on to Brian Hetherton who blasted it into the net for a great goal. Paul Hennessy added another goal soon after. Colm Gibson had a great match, and Jack Kellett stuck to his man like glue, while JP Purcell’s man will be sore tomorrow. Cormac O’Connell, Fionn McCabe and Ciaran Connell also worked hard in defence. Oldcastle played well but were just outscored by a team that focused on goals.

We travel to Celbridge next Saturday for the next fixture.

Thanks to Aine and Mary who provided the frozen spectators with good hot tea after the match.
