Oldcastle and Longwood finish all square

Oldcastle 1-6 Longwood 0-9

Both Oldcastle and Longwood finished their intermediate championship campaign in Dunderry with a draw on a scoreline of 1-06 to 0-9 (Sat.22 August 2015). It was Longwod who got the better start scoring from play in the opening minute with the advantage of the wind.  Conor McHugh kept Oldcastle in the game pulling off a save with Oran O’Reilly on hand to collect and work the ball back up the pitch. Longwood hit again and added another unanswered 2 to the scoreboard within the first ten minutes.
Good work from the Oldcastle forwards ensured they were beginning to dominate. Paddy Gilsenan was first to register a score for Oldcastle after Ronan Farrelly did well to win the ball at Midfield. Longwood were on target once more to keep their lead. Stephen Tierney did well to turn over from the full back line and allow Oldcastle to build, but it wasn’t until the 20th Minute that Oldcastle added another, with a converted Ronan Maguire free. Longwood kept their 3 point advantage heading into the second half having converted once again before the break.

Oldcastle started the second half better, having all to play for and using the aid of the wind. Following a foul on Gilsenan, Maguire sent over his second score. Oldcastle reduced the deficit as Paddy Rahill converted his first receiving a good ball in from Gilsenan. Just as Oldcastle were making their comeback, Longwood hit over one more.
Barry Curran displayed good work in defence winning the ball and working with Ronan Farrelly, who sent the ball into Robert Farrelly and he made no mistake as he beat the Longwood keeper- placing the ball in the back of the net. This gave Oldcastle the lead for the first time in the game, 10 minutes into the second half.
Longwood began to dominate and brought the game to a draw after 20 minutes. Longwood converted again but Tierney kept the minimum between the sides after Ronan Maguire did well to win the ball and being supported by O’Reilly who delivered to Tierney. Both sides were fighting for the win, when Curran won the ball in defence, he gave a good ball down to James Tuite and worked with Gilsenan and Rahill, with Rahill adding over his second from play. Yet again, leaving the sides level. The sides traded scores in the closing minutes of the game to leave it all level on the final whistle.
A good second half performance from Oldcastle ensured they didn’t leave empty-handed, with best displays from Ronan Farrelly, Oran, O’Reilly, Cian McPartland and Conor McHugh.
