Minors book their place in the MFC Final with their win over Killary Emmets
Oldcastle 3-12 Killary Emmets 0-5
Oldcastle secured a final spot with victory over the Syddan/Castletown combination in the MFC Div 3 Semi-Final played in a windy Millbrook on Tuesday evening (10/10/2017). The opening few minutes saw both sides make a number of handling errors before Keith Connell opened the scoring in the 8th minute. This was followed by a Pearse Sheridan effort and a point of the right boot of Kyle Kavanagh as the home side stretched their lead even though they were playing against the wind.
Oldcastle tried to work the ball into the visitors net, but Keith Connell’s palmed effort rebounded off the bar and into the defenders arms. Killary Emmets went straight on the attack and caught the Oldcastle defence at sea to convert for their first score on the 15 minute mark.
Oldcastle then had a point attempt waved wide. From the resulting goal kick, Colin Hawdon claimed the ball and went straight through the defence to fire to the net for the opening goal of the game with 18 minute. Killary Emmets added 3 further points to which OIdcastle replied with 2 from Robbie Smith and James Caffrey to leave the score at half time Oldcastle 1-5 Killary Emmets 0-4.
With the wind at their back Oldcastle looked set to push on, but this was not the case as the wides count continued to increase. Half time sub James McCluskey finished to the net for the opening score of the half. This was followed by 3 frees (Keith Connell 0-1, Kyle Kavanagh 0-2). Keith Connell added another point on the 20 minute mark which was the first point from play in the second half. Killary Emmets attempted to get back into the game, but a goal attempt was palmed away by Karl Gibney in the home side’s goal.
Oldcastle emptied the bench in the closing stages and it was another sub Cillian Connell, who joined his brother’s Keith and Darren on the field, who finished to the hit for the final score of the game.
