Meath made battle by Monaghan for victory
Meath 2-12 Monaghan 2-10
Meath had a dream start in this Rd.2 Gr. A game of the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT played on Sunday evening in Millbrook, Oldcastle. They had scored 4 unanswered points ( Padraig Cunningham, Conor Freyne (2) and Saran O Fionnagain) over Monaghan. A Conor Freyne goal and a Conal Ahearne point seemingly had Meath in the driving seat. But Monaghan responded with a goal by Jack Gormley and a Sean Burns point to leave 4 between the sides. Daragh Nolan got Meath’s second goal and followed up by a Daragh Nolan pointed free to lead again by 7 points at his stage.
Monaghan’s Barry Kieran and Tommy Monaghan got points to reduce the gap before the break.
H/T: Meath 2-5 Monaghan 1-3
On the re-start Meath added 4 points to their tally. Indeed, their lead could have been a lot more, but were off target on 3 great scoring opportunities. They now led by 9 points.
Monaghan then came much more into the game After a point and a goal by Cormac O’Connor. Points were exchanged and with Monaghan getting the upper hand in midfield, they were putting serious pressure on the Meath backs.
4 Monaghan points (Ed Walsh (2f), Dean Connolly & Barry Kiernan) had the minimum between the sides. Meath did have a goal attempt wide of the post before Conor Freyne’s point had 2 between the sides. A Fergal Heffernan point increased their lead. The play was hectic and fast between the sides with nobody holding back. An Ed Walsh free reduced the gap. Into injury time, Monaghan had a close range free and knew that they had to score a goal, but the Meath defence held out.
A great comeback by Monaghan after their poor start. We were treated to great end to end football played at incredible pace with terrific displays from both teams.
Meath”s Saran O Fionnagain received the Caffrey’s Millbrook Food Market ‘Man of the match’ award from Leo Halpin (Oldcastle GFC).
