Great come from behind win over St Michael’s in the BFL

Oldcastle 1-12 St Michael’s 0-10

A strong finish from Oldcastle put them in front with ten minutes left and they walked away with two points from Carlanstown in the BFL Div 3 (Rd.5) game played on Tuesday evening (14 June 2016). It was St.Michael’s who proved on target in the opening minutes of the game hitting over two points from play.  Oldcastle remained scoreless in the opening quarter, but then Ronan Maguire responded for Oldcastle with two of his own.

St.Michael’s kept the pressure on and added another keeping their advantage. Alan McCann sent over a free to level the game and keep Oldcastle in it before the break, but this was short lived. St.Michael’s continued to attack in the remaining ten minutes of the opening half and added two more to the scoresheet giving them a two point advantage going into the second half.
McCann was first of the mark in the second half converting another free. The Oldcastle defence were under pressure as St.Michael’s added another three in the third quarter. Oldcastle however did not lose momentum and Maguire added his third.

St.Michael’s and Oldcastle then traded scores with Maguire adding to his tally for the away side following great work from McCann and Brian Griffin. Oldcastle were reducing the deficit and starting to build as Gerard Reidy added his first of the game. After twenty minutes there was just a point between the sides, and a Brian Griffin goal came at the perfect time. Reidy won the kick out and sent the ball into Maguire and delivered it to Griffin as he made no mistake and beat the St.Michael’s ‘keeper. This was the first time Oldcastle took the lead in the game and they drove on from here. With seven minutes left on the clock Oldcastle sent over a brace of points, three from Reidy, another from Maguire and one from Colm Caffrey.

A great second half performance with a strong finish gave Oldcastle the two points they deserved.
