Oldcastle got the game off to a flyer in the JFC C game played in Drumbaragh on Friday evening (23 June 2017.) Their attacking forces of Stephen Lawless, Lee Healy and Michael Morris(0-1 each) hit three points in a row before Cortown clawed the game back level to make the contest a much tighter affair in the opening quarter. Cortown finally got a foothold in the game and led by 2 points but further scores from Oldcastle’s Healy and midfielder Conor Delaney pulled the teams back level to go in at half time all square.
Half Time score Oldcastle 0-5, Cortown 0-5
The second half didn’t disappoint the visiting support from both sides. Oldcastle started the second half as they did the first by utilizing their young attacking strength and send over 2 more points in the opening five minutes of the restart through Healy (0-1) and through a Kyle Kavanagh free (0-1).
The game surprisingly did not see any scores for a further ten minutes until Cortown stunned Oldcastle by winning and converting a penalty to give Cortown the lead. This turned the game on its head and in effect drove on Oldcastle to go all out attack for the remaining ten minutes. Their opportunity arose when corner forward Johnny Shortt took his chance one on one with the keeper and he made no mistake in rattling the ball home, much to joy of the travelling Oldcastle support. Oldcastle instantly put their name on the game once more and had control through the lift of the green flag being raised.
Substitute Robbie Farrelly, back from a long term knee injury, came off the bench and kicked two points (1 free) to kill the game, while Lee Healy also raised the white flag in the dying stages of the match to ensure Oldcastle were leaving with the victory. A fantastic contest from both sides. Final score Oldcastle 1-10, Cortown 1-7.
