(The draw for the Meath football championship took place tonight (19th Jan 2026) at Dunganny Meath GAA Centre of excellence.)

Substitute Harry Clarke-Murphy struck a dramatic 59th-minute goal as Meath produced a remarkable late comeback to defeat Cavan and claim the Gerry Reilly Under-16 Cup at Millbrook in Oldcastle on Sunday evening.

Three points behind and having failed to score for almost the entire second half, Meath appeared destined for defeat as the final entered its closing minutes. What followed, however, was a stunning reversal.

Joe Kearney ended Meath’s 28-minute scoring drought by converting a free in the 58th minute. Clarke-Murphy then found the net one minute later to turn a two-point deficit into a one-point advantage, before a late fisted point completed the comeback.

Meath still had to survive sustained Cavan pressure before the final whistle confirmed a memorable 2-07 to 1-08 victory.

The dramatic conclusion was in keeping with a final in which momentum repeatedly changed hands. Played in fine conditions, the opening exchanges were tentative as both teams took time to settle into the contest.

Emmet McCaul opened the scoring for Cavan, but Meath drew level in the 10th minute through Dara Loughran. Loughran then landed a two-point score in the 18th minute to move Meath 0-03 to 0-01 ahead.

McCaul responded with his second point for Cavan, cutting the deficit to one, but Meath began to find greater fluency in attack. Consecutive scores from Kearney and full-forward Conor Hassett stretched their advantage to 0-05 to 0-02.

Adam Smith kept Cavan in touch with a point in the 24th minute, but Meath soon delivered the first major blow of the final.

Eanna Kenny gathered possession and embarked on an outstanding solo run before applying the finish to raise the green flag. His goal moved Meath into a commanding 1-05 to 0-03 lead and appeared to place them firmly in control.

Cavan’s response before the interval proved crucial. Jack Forde found the Meath net shortly before the half-time whistle, giving his side renewed hope and reducing the deficit to a single point.

Meath consequently led by the narrowest of margins, 1-05 to 1-04, at the end of an absorbing opening half.

Both teams passed up opportunities following the restart. Meath registered a number of wides and also saw a goal chance cleared, while Cavan gradually began to impose themselves on the contest.

Senan Graham brought Cavan level in the 42nd minute before McCaul edged them ahead just one minute later. Having trailed for much of the first half, Cavan now possessed both the lead and the momentum.

Meath, meanwhile, were struggling to rediscover the attacking sharpness they had shown before the interval. Their search for a first score of the second half continued as Cavan strengthened their position.

Oliver Clarke extended Cavan’s advantage in the 53rd minute, and McCaul quickly followed with another point to establish a three-point cushion. With Cavan leading by 1-08 to 1-05 and Meath having gone so long without scoring, the cup appeared to be heading across the county boundary.

Meath refused to accept that outcome.

Kearney’s converted free in the 58th minute finally ended the drought and reduced Cavan’s lead to two points. That score offered Meath a glimmer of hope, but few could have anticipated how swiftly the final would be transformed.

Within a minute, substitute Clarke-Murphy delivered the decisive intervention. His goal propelled Meath from two points behind to one point ahead and sent the Meath support into celebration.

A fisted point provided further insurance, but there was still time for Cavan to mount one final assault. Meath were forced to defend under intense late pressure before the final whistle brought an extraordinary contest to an end.

For Cavan, the defeat was particularly cruel. They had recovered impressively from Kenny’s first-half goal, overturned the interval deficit and appeared to have done enough when they established a three-point lead late in the second half.

Meath’s persistence ultimately proved decisive. After enduring 28 scoreless second-half minutes, they summoned a closing burst of 1-02 when it mattered most, transforming imminent defeat into a stirring Gerry Reilly Cup triumph.

Clare were crowned Gerry Reilly Under-16 Shield Champions after holding their nerve in a dramatic penalty shootout at the end of a pulsating encounter with Louth on Saturday afternoon in Millbrook, Oldcastle.

Played in ideal conditions, this was a final rich in incident and momentum swings. Louth controlled much of the opening period and appeared to have established a match-winning position after the restart, but Clare summoned a stirring second-half recovery before prevailing 4-2 in the shootout after the teams finished level at 2-14 to 1-17 following extra-time.

Louth made an assured start, reeling off three points inside the opening quarter. Conor Duffy opened their account from a free, while Tom O’Connor was also prominent as the Wee County imposed themselves on proceedings.

Clare endured a less fluent opening, registering three wides before Ryan Brody finally settled them with a converted free in the 14th minute. A further score left just a point between the teams at the first water break, with Louth leading by 0-3 to 0-2.

Louth quickly reasserted their authority when play resumed. Ruairi Finglas pushed their advantage out to two before Duffy added a two-point free, moving his side 0-6 to 0-2 ahead.

There might have been even greater damage on the scoreboard. Louth fashioned several promising goal opportunities, taking a point from one opening before another effort struck the upright. Clare survived that difficult spell and were rewarded shortly before half-time when goalkeeper Conor Griffin landed an excellent two-point free.

That score kept the Banner County within touching distance, although Louth still carried a 0-7 to 0-5 advantage into the interval.

The second half began disastrously for Clare. A loose kick-out or attempted clearance was punished ruthlessly as Louth found the net, stretching their lead to 1-8 to 0-5. O’Connor followed with another point, and suddenly Louth were seven clear.

Clare’s defence was placed under sustained pressure, with a fine save preventing Louth from adding a second goal. By the 35th minute, Louth had moved 1-9 to 0-6 in front and appeared to have one hand on the Shield.

But the character Clare displayed from that point transformed the contest.

They began to chip away at the deficit, gradually finding greater fluency in attack and forcing Louth onto the back foot. A golden opportunity arrived when Clare were awarded a penalty with Louth leading by 1-10 to 0-8, but Brody’s effort went wide.

It could have been a crushing setback. Instead, Brody responded emphatically.

His subsequent free appeared destined to sail over the bar, only for the ball to drop beneath the crossbar and into the top corner of the Louth net. It was a moment that breathed fresh life into Clare’s challenge and changed the emotional complexion of the final.

With Robbie Kelly, Griffin and Brody driving Clare forward, the Banner completed a remarkable recovery. Andrew Watson also supplied a crucial goal, while Keenan Tally added to the scoring effort as Clare seemed destined to win. However Louth were putting a lot of pressure on the Clare backs and drew level with Conor Duffy’s converted 2pt free just before the final whistle of normal time.

Even extra-time could not separate two fiercely committed sides. Louth continued to draw inspiration from O’Connor, Finglas, Oisin Kellett and Liam McKeown, but Clare refused to yield. When the final whistle sounded, the scoreboard read Clare 2-14, Louth 1-17.

A dramatic final would therefore be decided from the penalty spot.

Clare displayed remarkable composure in the shootout, converting four penalties while Louth managed two. The decisive kick sparked jubilant celebrations as Clare completed an extraordinary comeback and secured the Shield after a contest that demanded courage, resilience and no little skill.

Louth will inevitably reflect on the opportunities that might have carried them beyond Clare’s reach. They led for long stretches and produced some excellent football, but Clare’s refusal to accept defeat ultimately proved decisive.

On an afternoon when the momentum shifted repeatedly, the Banner survived every setback—including a missed penalty and a seven-point deficit—to emerge victorious in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.

Cavan needed extra-time to withstand a stirring Offaly comeback and secure their place in the Gerry Reilly Cup final following a gripping semi-final at Millbrook, Oldcastle on Saturday afternoon.

For long stretches, Cavan appeared to have the contest under control. They led by five points at the interval and moved ten clear during the second half, but an Offaly side displaying remarkable resilience dragged itself back into contention through three goals, two of them scored by the outstanding Joe Fury.

Cavan eventually rediscovered their composure in extra-time, with Hugo Morgan’s penalty providing the decisive blow as they advanced to a final meeting with Meath. Offaly will now face Tyrone in the Shield final.

Despite playing into the wind, Cavan established themselves from the throw-in. Their movement and economy in possession allowed them to register the opening four points before Offaly finally opened their account from play.

The crucial score of the first half arrived when Tom Crotty supplied Adam Smith, who made no mistake in finding the Offaly net. That goal gave Cavan a firm grip on proceedings, and they carried a 1-6 to 0-4 advantage into the interval.

With the wind now behind them, Cavan resumed in commanding fashion and reeled off four unanswered points. Offaly desperately needed a response and found it when they were awarded a penalty, which Oliver Goulding confidently converted.

Cavan were not immediately unsettled and continued to add to their tally. At one stage, the Breffni side held a ten-point advantage and appeared bound for a comfortable victory.

Offaly, however, refused to accept that outcome.

A sweeping attacking move was finished emphatically by Fury for Offaly’s second goal, breathing new life into the contest. The same player struck again soon afterwards, and suddenly all the pressure was on Cavan.

With Offaly carrying the momentum, Cavan were forced into survival mode during a frantic conclusion. The Faithful County came close to manufacturing a winning opportunity in the dying moments, but the final whistle sounded with the teams level at Cavan 1-14, Offaly 3-8.

Cavan’s substitutions had a major influence once extra-time commenced. Playing with the wind during the opening period, they regained control and struck six unanswered points to establish a 1-20 to 3-8 advantage at the turnaround.

Offaly again demonstrated their fighting qualities by opening the scoring after the change of ends. They appeared surprisingly comfortable despite facing into the wind and continued to ask serious questions of the Cavan defence.

The decisive moment arrived when Cavan were awarded a penalty and Morgan stepped forward to dispatch it. Even then, Offaly would not yield and were desperately unlucky when another goal attempt struck the post.

That proved to be their final opportunity to transform the contest. Cavan steadied themselves during the closing stages and finished the stronger, eventually emerging with a hard-earned nine-point victory.

The final margin was harsh on an Offaly team whose courage and second-half recovery contributed enormously to a memorable semi-final. Cavan, though, showed their own resilience after being dragged into extra-time and produced their best football when the contest was there to be won.
