Opening round win for Oldcastle in the Corn na Boinne
Oldcastle 2-5 Dunderry 0-9
Dunderry were first of the mark converting two points within the opening minutes of this first round match in the Corn na Boinne played on Saturday evening (20 Feb,2016) in Millbrook. A goal from Alan McCann brought Oldcastle into the game, following good work from Eoin Gilsenan, Cian McPartland and James Tuite in defence. Dunderry hit over one more to bring the game to a draw after six minutes. The Oldcastle defence were strong preventing Dunderry from scoring for the subsequent ten minutes. Gilsenan proved to be on target hitting over his first of the game which was quickly followed by a point from McCann.
A converted free from Dunderry and a point from play left nothing between the sides yet again in the second quarter of the game. Oldcastle were awarded a penalty and CJ Healy netted with ease. Good work in the Oldcastle half by Tuite resulted in CJ tapping over again as a Ewan Feeney shot deflected off the crossbar. Dunderry reduced the deficit before the break adding another point to their tally. Oldcastle, playing against the wind, had a three point lead heading into the second half.
The sides traded scores in the second half as Robert Farrelly increased the Oldcastle advantage with a point from play. Healy added his second within the third quarter working with Farrelly and Niall Mangan. The Oldcastle defence worked well and held Dunderry to three points in the second half ensuring they kept their lead.
After a strong performance all over the field Oldcastle finished 2 points clear of Dunderry.
