Oldcastle 1-11 Navan O’Mahonys 2-08
A draw is better than a loss, but a win is better than a draw, and the Oldcastle lads will be rueing missed opportunities to take the win in this opening match of the Championship. The first half was a torrid affair for Oldcastle, with O’Mahonys dominating the game, and the blustery wind not doing us any favours either. Conor Delaney got Oldcastle off the mark, with two from Garrett O’Reilly and a lovely CJ free seeing both sides on four points. O’Mahonys added on another, but CJ retaliated with a fine score, level again. The next NOM attack resulted in a lovely long-range point, and was followed by a converted free, followed by the hammer blow of a goal, to leave them five ahead. Oldcastle attacked again and again but each fizzled out without a score, before NOMs came again just before the first half ended, with another point, to leave it Oldcastle 0-05, Navan O’Mahonys 1-08 at the break.

It was an energised Oldcastle who came out of the dressing room, and they made their intentions clear from the start, with Jason Scully getting a great ball in to Ronan Maguire, on to Garrett who shot for goal, blasted off the crossbar and back out! A collective swear word from all the Oldcastle supporters, but the next O’Mahonys attack was halted by a super Conor Delaney intercept, the ball to Colin Hawdon and up the field, a great ball way up to Garrett who made a lovely pass to the speedy CJ coming up alongside; CJ shoots and yes! right to the back of the net for a super goal, game on! The O’Mahonys’ kickout was brought down by Keith Connell, on to Garrett, to Scully, on to Pearse Sheridan and back to Scully who sent her over the bar. Cian McPartland and Oran O’Reilly were putting serious pressure on the Navan lads now. They looked rattled, and the next O’Mahonys attack resulted in a free which they sent wide, with the Packie Kevin kickout to Ronan Maguire going upfield via CJ, in to the waiting Garrett O’Reilly and over the bar.
O’Mahony’s kept possession of the next ball until the Oldcastle 30 yard line, where a bit of a melee ensued, and out of it emerged Jason Scully, ball in hand and heading in the right direction, great run upfield and a lovely ball in to CJ for a mark on the 20 yard line, he tipped her over to level the match once more! With that, the kickout was fisted down by Colin Hawdon to Garrett, who was awarded a free, CJ to take, and he coolly tipped her over the bar again, for a one point lead!

Back to reality with the next play, O’Mahony’s working her all the way upfield and managing to wrangle a goal, ahead once more! Packie’s kickout found Ronan Maguire, on to Keith Connell who made a great run, and finally in to James Cooke, having a super match, and over she went for the point.
O’Mahony’s attacked again, but Keith Connell cleared it, back to Packie Kevin, onwards to Colin Hawdon, to Lee Healy with a good run, back to Colin, to Dylan Garrigan and finally to Pearse Sheridan who sent her between the posts., level match once again! With about six or seven minutes played out after that, O’Mahony’s shot two wides, but Oldcastle had some super chances to take the win, but with a few missed passes or saved shots, it just wasn’t to be, and when the referee blew up the match – a bit early you would think – it was on a final score of Oldcastle 1-11, O’Mahony’s 2-08.

Oldcastle 0-09 Blackhall Gaels 1-05
This afternoon’s (02/07/2023) Premier FC Final had the worst possible start for Oldcastle, with Blackhall Gaels getting a goal within a minute. Despite that, as the game played on, Oldcastle looked the stronger. Garrett O’Reilly was first on the scoreboard with a point in the eighth minute, followed soon after by a super point from Keith Connell, way out on the sideline. The Blackhall Gaels kick-out was brought down by Garrett, passed to Keith and sent straight back over the bar again to level the score. Oldcastle looked the stronger but were wasting chances, with frees and shots going astray, but Blackhall Gaels were doing the same, but even worse, missing a free chance that even I would have put over. After a lull, Oldcastle got going again thanks to good work from Mattie Cadden and Darren Hawdon, getting the ball in to the phenomenal Lee Healy who sent her over from way out. It was a Lee Healy intercept straight after that got the ball on to Darren, to Cillian Connell, on to James Cooke, to Garrett, back to Lee, on to Mossy Flood, forward via the speedy Ben Grey, and back to James Cooke who put her between the posts. A BHGs free soon after fell short and was cleared by Rian Mulvanny. BHG went on the attack but a super intercept by Brian Hetherton dispossessed them, the ball fed on to CJ Healy, who sailed her over. The opposition kept coming however, and were rewarded with another point just before the half-time whistle, to leave it Oldcastle 0-06, Blackhall Gaels 1-01 at the break.

Oldcastle knew they should have had a bigger margin between the teams as the ball was thrown in again, but it was Blackhall Gaels who came out fighting, with two points immediately to level the match, then adding on another to go ahead. That finally woke up the lads: Darren Hawdon winning the ball back, on to Ben Grey, to Conor Delaney, back to Ben and Darren, on to Mossy Flood who made a good run upfield, on to Louis Colleran who fed her in to Garrett for an Oldcastle score; match level again. Birthday boy Louis Colleran was making a super attack when fouled: CJ converted, a point ahead once more. Blackhall Gaels then missed a free and a scoring opportunity. The newly married Stephen Tierney took to the field to great applause: the next few minutes could make or marr the start of his honeymoon! Oldcastle kept applying the pressure, but with no reward, and it was the Blackhall Gaels who took the next point on the 25th minute, to level the match once more. More wides from BHGs before they took a quick free: too quick though, albeit the score was recorded on the scoreboard before the matter was resolved, and it was deleted again, still a drawn match, with only a minute of playing time left. It was do or die, and they did!

A Ciaran Healy clearance found Mossy Flood, on to Ross Cadden, to Lee Healy, back to Brian Hetherton, on to James Cooke, to Conor Delaney, back to Keith Connell, don’t lose it lads, on to Darren Hawdon, back in to Conor Delaney, to the honeymooning Stephen Tierney, to Conor Delaney, and finally, out of the mass of bodies, to Garrett, head down and running as only Garrett does, he caught the ball and kicked: everyone held their breath as it curled and sailed between the posts for what proved to be the WINNING POINT! Blackhall Gaels had a final chance with a free, it went wide and the whistle blew on an Oldcastle victory! We always knew it was the good Castlerahan influx in Oldcastle that lifts the town up, and Garrett proved that today, although mammy Sandra contends that it’s the Brunton blood! Whatever it is, the win was Oldcastle’s and Joint Captains Lee Healy and Keith Connell stepped up the raise the Cup! A lovely speech from Keith, who should have been sunning himself in Spain, he changed his flights, and made it worth it! Enjoy the Sangrias this evening!

Oldcastle 2-10 Dunderry 0-08
Our Senior lads travelled to take on Dunderry in the Reserve Championship on this beautiful summers’ evening (20/5/2023). They looked the stronger from the start, with points from Louis Colleran, Eoin Smith, Conor McHugh and CJ Healy to start the match. An injury to Mossy Flood saw the introduction of Ciaran “The Punisher” Healy, Ireland Kickboxing Champion, after a two year absence. You wouldn’t know he’d ever been away, with a great performance, his first touch of the game a great catch of a Ross Cadden pass, and on to brother CJ for the next point. Darren Hawdon was busting himself in defence, and a fine clearance from him on to Conor McHugh was returned, he made a great run upfield, getting the ball in to Stephen Tierney who kicked her over, although he was unlucky enough not to get a goal with the ball whacking the bar on her way. It was Stephen who took the next point also: the final one of the first half, leaving it Oldcastle 0-07, Dunderry 0-04 at the break.

Dunderry took the first point of the second half, and put Oldcastle under sustained pressure for the first ten minutes, some great play but their shooting letting them down with three wides in a row. It was Oldcastle who then powered ahead then: the Dunderry kickout intercepted by Cillian Connell, on to Ross Cadden, to Lee Healy, to Louis Colleran and finally in to Tierney again for another point. Eoin Smith took the next, with Tierney converting soon after.
Dunderry regrouped and took three in a row to reduce the gap to two points, but with that, Oldcastle kicked on again, a Joe Lynch goal putting space between the teams. With time ticking away, Rian Mulvanny’s kickout found Ciaran Healy, on to Ross and to CJ who made a great run upfield, finally chipping her in to Stephen Tierney who eventually got his goal! The final whistle blew on a great win for the lads on a score of Oldcastle 2-10, Dunderry 0-08.

Oldcastle 2-11 Curraha 0-10
After a stuttery start to the A League, the lads finally got the win they were after this evening (21/04/2023), when Curraha came to Millbrook. Oldcastle dominated the first quarter, with points from Robbie Farrelly, Louis Colleran and Keith Connell followed by a lovely goal from Conor Delaney, plus another fine point from CJ; the opposition only recording one point in that time. Curraha added on two, before another super effort from CJ, at an impossible angle, sailed over. Another point plus a free from Curraha finished off the first half, with the score at Oldcastle 1-05, Curraha 0-05.

The second half got underway with a point from Garrett O’Reilly, who will be shouting for Cavan tomorrow evening. A nice catch by Keith Connell was fed on via Mossy Flood, to Louis Colleran, a nice pass high in the air caught by Inspector Gadget type hand movements from Pearse Sheridan, on a good run, he found Garrett, on to CJ and finally to Oran Mulvanny who caught and kicked straight over the bar, a lovely solid point. A foul on Eoin Smith was converted by Robbie, before Curraha mounted an attack, dangerous play close to Conor McHugh’s goals, but the Oldcastle defence put in great work to clear her, outfield to Paddy Gilsenan, on to Eoin Smith and back to Paddy who fired her straight over.

With the next play, Paddy had another chance, a super shot on goals denied but the goalie’s save sent her back out to the waiting CJ who took the point. It was CJ again with the next play who won the ball outfield and was fouled, awarded the free he went from there and sent her over from way out. At this stage Curraha finally got their first point of the second half but also lost a man to a red card, but that seemed to waken them up if anything; they then took the next four points without reply, reducing the eight point lead to four. With that Oran Mulvanny on a run got the ball in to Conor Delaney, he found Lee Healy, and in to Robbie Farrelly who buried her to the net for a lovely goal, and the final score of the match, a nice win for the lads on a scoreline of Oldcastle 2-11, Curraha 0-10.

Oldcastle: Conor McHugh, Louis Colleran (0-01), Oran O’Reilly, Mossy Flood, Cillian Connell, Keith Connell (0-01), Lee Healy, James Cooke, Oran Mulvanny (0-01), CJ Healy (0-04), Conor Delaney (1-00), Pearse Sheridan, Garrett O’Reilly (0-01), Eoin Smith, Robbie Farrelly (1-02). Subs: Paddy Gilsenan (0-01), Paddy Rahill, Ross Cadden, Lloyd Colleran, Mattie Cadden

Oldcastle 3-17 Syddan 3-07
After their first round win over Blackhall Gaels, Oldcastle were in a confident mood coming into tonight’s (15/04/2023) home match against Syddan. The rain started to pour at Millbrook as Ref Seamus O’Connor threw in the ball, and never let up for the duration. Syddan took the first point, but that was soon cancelled out by a lovely effort from Lee Healy. Eoin Smith was brought down soon after, and CJ Healy stepped up to convert, followed by a great blockdown from Conor Delaney, the ball finding Garrett O’Reilly who sailed her over. The Syddan kickout was brought down by CJ who got her in to DJ Monaghan, who took the point. That kickout was taken down by Paddy Rahill, on via the speedy Ben Grey, to Conor Delaney, on to Eoin Smith and over to DJ who smashed her to the back of the net for the first goal of the game! Syddan retaliated straight away, the ball hoofed up the field and straight to the back of the Oldcastle goal within a minute. Rian Mulvanny’s kickout found Ben Grey, a great catch from him, and onwards via Conor Delaney and Louis Colleran, in to Garrett O’Reilly for another point, followed soon after by a lovely score from Cillian Connell. Syddan were doing their best to keep in touch, three points adrift at this stage, but the Syddan kick-out was taken down by Garrett O’Reilly who put her straight back in to the Syddan goal, to widen the gap to six.
More points followed from Garrett, CJ, Eoin and Cillian, before some great play from Ciaran Connell got the ball on to CJ Healy for another goal. Syddan once more responded, a goal of their own the final score of the first half, with the score Oldcastle 3-10, Syddan 2-04.
Oldcastle got the second-half underway with a point from Lloyd Colleran, followed by a super long-range effort from James Cooke. DJ and Garrett added more points, before Syddan were awarded a penalty. Sean Maxwell was now in the goals, and he made a super save! Syddan were suddenly energised however, and now added on three points and a goal without reply. It was too little too late however, and with the last point of the match from Lloyd Colleran, when the final whistle blew the score was Oldcastle 3-17, Syddan 3-07.

Oldcastle: Rian Mulvanny, Mattie Cadden, Louis Colleran, Alan Gilsenan, Lee Healy (0-1) , Mossy Flood, Cillian Connell, Ben Grey, Paddy Rahill, Lloyd Colleran (0-02), Conor Delaney, Ciaran Connell (0-02), Garrett O’Reilly (1-05), Eoin Smith (0-01), DJ Monaghan (1-02). Subs: CJ Healy (1-02), James Cooke (0-02), Sean Maxwell, Stephen Tierney, Ross Cadden.

Oldcastle 0-11 Dunderry 1-08
Oldcastle and Dunderry played out a hard-fought match in the AFL at Millbrook this cold afternoon (8/4/2023), with the splitting of the points on offer probably a fair finish up. Dunderry got off to the perfect start, with an opportunistic goal in the first play of the game. Robbie Farrelly and Pearse Sheridan took points, before Dunderry added on three of their own. A good dispossession by Oran Mulvanny won the ball back for Oldcastle, on via Darren Hawdon and Conor Delaney, to Ben Grey and Ross Cadden, back to Ben Grey on a good run, to Darren again, Conor Delaney and finally to Eoin Smith who took a nice point. Three points the gap again, Conor Delaney fired the next point over, followed by a converted free from Robbie Farrelly. Dunderry took another, before a Dunderry kick-out was taken down by Pearse Sheridan, on to Keith Connell and in to James Cooke who sailed her over. An Oran Mulvanny ball on to Oran O’Reilly then found Lee Healy, to Conor Delaney and back to Lee again, he put her between the posts for the last score of the first half, leaving it Oldcastle 0-07, Dunderry 1-05 at the break.

A foul on James Cooke upon the resumption saw Robbie convert the free and leave it all level a minute in, with point from CJ soon after seeing Oldcastle go ahead for the first time. Keith Connell took the next, but Dunderry came back with a point of their own, then added on a free to level it up again. Dunderry had a great chance to take the win with a super shot on goal but a fantastic save from Rian Mulvanny kept Oldcastle in it. A free was awarded to them however, and over she went: Dunderry ahead again. In possession again but they handled the ball on the ground and it came back to Oldcastle, all the way upfield to Robbie Farrelly who was lamped out of it. Awarded a free, he dusted himself off and put her between the posts to level the match once more. For the final five minutes both sides had chances: Dunderry putting a relatively simple free wide, and Oldcastle also squandering a few chances, so that when referee Joseph Curran blew the final whistle it was on a drawn score of Oldcastle 0-11, Dunderry 1-08.

Oldcastle 2-06 St. Michael’s 0-12
St. Michael’s came to Millbrook this evening (3/3/2023) to get the AFL Div 1B underway, a game played in perfect conditions, albeit a bit cold. A few fruitless plays went by before Paddy Gilsenan won a St. Michael’s kickout, getting her on to Ross Cadden, he did great work getting her in to James Cooke who was in position and shot her over the bar. A Ross clearance soon after found Robbie Farrelly who got her on to Lee Healy, on to Stephen Tierney in the corner, he found CJ Healy who in turn found Robbie Farrelly who put her between the posts. A good run from Keith Connell saw the next ball reach Ross again, to Paddy Gilsenan, to James Cooke, on to Paddy Rahill and finally to Robbie who put her over once more. A nice leisurely start from Oldcastle, with St. Michael’s shooting mad wides and kept scoreless thanks to Louis, Darren and Dylan, left the lads three up after ten minutes. St. Michael’s then took their first score thanks to a free, followed straight after by a fine point from play. A clever pass from James Cooke found the waiting Stephen Tierney who added on Oldcastle’s next point. St. Michael’s took the next, with Keith Connell adding another for Oldcastle. A massive block down on a Robbie Farrelly shot by the St. Michael’s backs then found itself worked right up the field for their next score, followed just before the end of the half by an easy free which they converted to leave it level at the break, 0-05 apiece.

St. Michael’s won the ball at the outset of the second half, and had the first point on the board within seconds, and were unlucky not to add another soon after when their effort hit the post and went wide. Conor McHugh’s kickout went forward via Lee Healy, to Conor Delaney, to CJ Healy and Dylan Garrigan, on to Ben Grey, to Tierney and finally to Robbie who took the point. St. Michael’s then upped the ante and fired over three unanswered points and suddenly it was Oldcastle chasing the game. More long minutes of wides, missed passes and fruitless play, and it was St. Michaels who took the next point to go four ahead, with only five minutes left!

With that, a Ben Grey high shot from way out dropped in and delighted all along the lines by landing in the back of the net! Game on, finally a bit of urgency all round, both sides scrabbling to get the next score, but once again it was St. Michael’s who got lucky with a free; converted, followed by a lovely point from play! Déjà vu, Oldcastle are behind by three and the game is into injury time, when Conor McHugh’s kickout makes its’ way swiftly upfield via Darren Hawdon and Robbie Farrelly, into a melee in front of the St. Michael’s goal and PENALTY awarded to Oldcastle. Up steps the unperturbed CJ Healy who smashes her to the back of the net, and it’s all level again at 1-09 to 0-12! A final chance for the Michaels as they are awarded a late late free, with the goalie coming up to take it but it goes just wide, and with that Peter O’Halloran blew the final whistle on a draw: not the best start to the league but still better than a loss, and we march on to the next round unbeaten! That takes place in Ballinabrackey on Sunday 12th at 2pm.

Oldcastle 1-14 Drumbaragh Emmets 1-05
With both sides unbeaten in their first two matches, tonights’ encounter (17/02/2023) would decide the team progressing to the Corn na Boinne Semi-Finals. Oran Mulvanny was first on the scoreboard for Oldcastle, a fine point at a tight angle. Drumbaragh levelled, but that was to be for the last time: Robbie Farrelly converting a free soon after to take the lead again. The Drumbaragh kickout was brought down by Keith Connell, he passed her on to Paddy Rahill who passed her back to the same Keith Connell now travelling at speed, another good catch and kick and she went over the bar.

Oldcastle were getting a nice rhythm going now, and the next play saw Keith get the ball on to Oran Mulvanny, upfield via Dylan Garrigan, back to Oran, to the hardworking Ross Cadden, back to Dylan, to Oran, over to Stephen Tierney, back to Keith and finally to CJ who blasted her to the back of the net. That was followed straight away by another point from Keith Connell, Drumbaragh then adding two of their own. The kickout found James Cooke who was having a super game, on via CJ, Darren Hawdon, to Dylan, travelling at speed as always, to Ross Cadden, on to Ciaran Connell who found the waiting Garrett O’Reilly who put her between the posts for another point. There was a Castlerahan support in the stand for the Drumbaragh Emmets manager Fiachra Sweeney, so plenty of mad interclub connections all over the place. Keith Connell had a 45 to take soon after: tipped on to Dylan Garrigan who sailed her over the bar. Stephen Tierney was involved in a lot of play, and took a lovely score of this own, Drumbaragh adding a free to their tally. The last play of the half saw a CJ free on to Steven Lawless, he found Ross, back to Steven, to Oran, to Paddy Rahill, a great ball at an angle from him in to Stephen Tierney, Tierney fouled, Robbie converted, to leave the score at half-time Oldcastle 1-08, Drumbaragh Emmets 0-04.

The second half got underway with the gentle sideways rain turning into aggressive waves of wetness: but that didn’t bother CJ who converted a free, followed by another from Robbie Farrelly, who was obviously a marked man and took some battering tonight, tackles coming at him from every direction that would kill a horse, but like the warhorse he is he seemed to shrug them off and just keep going. A lovely catch from Ciaran Connell made its’ way to Stephen Tierney, he got her in to the waiting Oran Mulvanny who took a lovely point. Steven Lawless took the next, Drumbaragh adding one, but Cillian Connell getting the ball in to James Cooke and on to Robbie Farrelly for the next for Oldcastle. It’s always the scorers who get the namechecks, but the Oldcastle defence were great throughout, starters and subs alike working hard and denying chances over and over. Drumbaragh kept pushing for scores and it eventually paid off with a goal in the dying minutes, but with that, the honour of the final score of the match went to veteran Paddy Rahill, with a final scoreline of Oldcastle 1-14, Drumbaragh 1-05, sealing Oldcastle’s Corn na Boinne group win and progression to the Semi-Final against St Patrick’s in Stamullen.
