Oldcastle secured the Div 3 Minor Football Championship Crown with a well-earned victory over Kilbride in the final played in Pairc Tailteann on Sunday, 22nd October.

Playing against a strong breeze it was Lee Healy who got Oldcastle on the scoreboard in the second minute of the game. This was followed by scores from Pearse Sheridan and Colin Hawdon. Kilbride replied with a goal after 10 minutes to level the game. Oldcastle replied instantly with a Kyle Kavanagh free before Oran Mulvanny and then James McCluskey finished to the net within 2 minutes to extend Oldcastle’s lead. Following great work by the very busy Colin Hawdon, Oran Mulvanny added another point and from the resulting kick out he won the ball and laid it off to Lee Healy who finished to the net. Oldcastle went 8 minutes without scoring in which time Kilbride added 4 points to close the gap. Kilbride added an another point on the 29th minute which everyone thought would be the last score of the game but as ref Eamonn Barry let the game flow Robbie Smith torn through the Kilbride defence and following a 50 yard solo run he burst the ball past the helpless goalie. Kilbride added a point but yet again the Oldcastle lads attacked and Oran Mulvanny finished to the net again in the 3rd minute of injury time to leave the half time score Oldcastle 5-5 Kilbride 1-7.

The Kilbride coaches’s half time talk worked wonders and they came out of the traps at 100 mph. As the tried to cut the gap and go for goal, Karl Gibney was called into action and made a great save. Robbie Smith and Kyle Kavanagh added points for Oldcastle. Colin Hawdon who was operating around the half forwards but covering every inch of the Pairc Tailteann pitch was winning a lot of possession and was involved in most of the Oldcastle play and chipped in with a point on the 9th minute. Kilbride were pushing hard and grabbed 2 second half goals but Oldcastle kept the score board ticking with further points from Kyle Kavanagh, Colin Hawdon and a bizarre own point. Sub James Caffrey converted brilliantly as Oldcastle upped the extra gear to close out the game. The final 2 scores game from man of the match Hawdon and Oran Mulvanny to the leaving the final score Oldcastle 5-14 Kilbride 3-13.

When ref Eamon Barry blew the full time whistle the huge Oldcastle support went mad as the club secured a minor trophy for the 4th time in 3 years. It was a great team performance with Colin Hawdon, Robbie Smith and Mossy Flood leading by the way.

In a nice gesture captain Keith Connell wished Kilbride’s Mark Dempsey who was stretchered off in the closing stage a quick recovery.

Oldcastle: Karl Gibney, Dylan Garrigan, Eoin McCluskey, Stephen Milmoe, Tomas Flood, Keith Connell, Conor Hetherton, Roanan Taggart, Robbie Smith (1-1), Oran Mulvanny (2-1), Pearse Sheridan (0-1), Kyle Kavanagh (0-3), Lee Healy (1-1), Colin Hawdon (0-4), James McCluskey (1-0)

Oldcastle 3-12 Killary Emmets 0-5

Oldcastle secured a final spot with victory over the Syddan/Castletown combination in the MFC Div 3 Semi-Final played in a windy Millbrook on Tuesday evening (10/10/2017). The opening few minutes saw both sides make a number of handling errors before Keith Connell opened the scoring in the 8th minute. This was followed by a Pearse Sheridan effort and a point of the right boot of Kyle Kavanagh as the home side stretched their lead even though they were playing against the wind.

Oldcastle tried to work the ball into the visitors net, but Keith Connell’s palmed effort rebounded off the bar and into the defenders arms. Killary Emmets went straight on the attack and caught the Oldcastle defence at sea to convert for their first score on the 15 minute mark.

Oldcastle then had a point attempt waved wide. From the resulting goal kick, Colin Hawdon claimed the ball and went straight through the defence to fire to the net for the opening goal of the game with 18 minute. Killary Emmets added 3 further points to which OIdcastle replied with 2 from Robbie Smith and James Caffrey to leave the score at half time Oldcastle 1-5 Killary Emmets 0-4.

With the wind at their back Oldcastle looked set to push on, but this was not the case as the wides count continued to increase. Half time sub James McCluskey finished to the net for the opening score of the half. This was followed by 3 frees (Keith Connell 0-1, Kyle Kavanagh 0-2). Keith Connell added another point on the 20 minute mark which was the first point from play in the second half. Killary Emmets attempted to get back into the game, but a goal attempt was palmed away by Karl Gibney in the home side’s goal.

Oldcastle emptied the bench in the closing stages and it was another sub Cillian Connell, who joined his brother’s Keith and Darren on the field, who finished to the hit for the final score of the game.

They now play Kilbride in the MFC Div 3 Final

Oldcastle: Karl Gibney, Mossy Flood, Eoin McCluskey, Conor Hetherton, Dylan Garrigan, Keith Connell (0-3 1 free), Stephen Milmoe, Ronan Taggart, Robbie Smith (0-1), Lee Healy, Pearse Sheridan (0-1), Kyle Kavanagh (0-3 2 frees), Oran Mulvanny(0-1), Colin Hawdon (1-2), James Caffrey (0-1).

Subs: James McCluskey (1-0) for James Caffrey, Josh Halpin for Lee Healy, Darren Connell for Stephen Milmoe, Louis Colleran for Conor Hetherton, Cillian Connell (1-0) for Pearse Sheridan, Jack McDonnell Fox for Oran Mulvanny.

Oldcastle 1-18 Summerhill 2-8

The minors made no mistake this time as they overcame Summerhill in the MFC Div 2 Replay played this evening (Friday, 26 August 2016) in Summerhill. Both sides traded scores before Colin Hawdon grabbed Oldcastle’s goal early in the first half. Summerhill hit back with 2 first half goals, both of which came from the penalty spot. ‘Keeper, Jack McDonnell was very unlucky with the second one as he dived the right way and got his hand to the ball, but it just went inside the post.

The half time score was Summerhill 2-5 Oldcastle 1-6.

Oldcastle upped their game in the second half and started to take control. Dylan Garrigan was gathering a lot of ball around his half-back line and chipped in with a long range score. Robbie Smith and Jason Scully looked dangerous every time they had the ball.

When Summerhill did attack, Jack McDonnell made some good saves and was in full control when the ball dropped around his goals. Oran O’Reilly was working hard and broke up a number of attacks and never stopped tracking back to help out.

The great team effort resulted in 12 second half points which was more than enough to secure victory.

Best wishes to the Summerhill player who left the ground by ambulance due to an arm injury sustained in the first half.

Jason Scully added a brace to put the home side back in front but Longwood\Clonard grabbed their first score from play to stay in touch. Robbie Smith was working hard and won a free on his own 20 metre line. The ball was quickly moved up the field to Oran O’Reilly who calmly converted. Steven Lawless made a break forward for a quick 45′ and stuck a fine point. The visitors then won the ball in the left half forward position and the attacker tore through the defence. As he closed in on Karl Gibney in the Oldcastle goal he let a shot fly towards the goal. The crossbar came to the rescue as the ball skimmed the black spot and went over instead of under the bar. Kyle Kavanagh added 2 points (1 Free) before Steven Lawless and Jason Scully finished the scoring to leave the half time score Oldcastle 0-11 Longwood \ Clonard 0-5.
Despite Oldcastle now having the wind at their backs it was Longwood who would started the brightest adding 3 points without reply. Scully grabbed a point before Kyle Kavanagh converted a free. The home side needed to get a grip on the game and the management of Lorcan Fox, John Caffrey and Paddy Gilsenan starting introducing the subs one of which was James P Caffrey at full forward. A long ball in was well caught by Caffrey who as he turned to find space was pulled to the ground. Ref Gerry Skelly awarded the penalty and up stepped Jason Scully. He stuck the ball to the keepers right hand side but the keeper got his hand to the ball. Scully followed up but again the keeper blocked the shot. As the ball ricochet up into the air, Scully jumped highest to fist it to the net. This put breathing space between the sides and further points from Cillian Connell and Scully secured the win.
