A tight and competitive LM/FM ACFL (Div 4) Final for our Minors in Pairc Tailteann this evening (22/7/2025), and the right result at full time! Killary Emmets took the first point of the match with one minute on the clock, but Oldcastle responded immediately; a Simas Abraitis ball in to Mark Halpin who clipped her nicely in to the waiting Callum Keatinge who went for goal, and only a heroic save by the Killary goalie stopped it. Alex Smith put over the ’45 to leave it a point apiece. Another for Killary Emmets, the kickout finding Jack Pakenham, on to Mikey Timmins, to Simas, back to Mikey, to Mark Halpin, back to Mikey, to Matt Lynch, nicely worked in by Kyle McEnroe, back to Matt and final to Mark again who sailed her over the bar. Some five minutes play then with no score from either side: Conor Russell doing great work for Oldcastle, while Killary Emmets had an almost certain goal but for a super save from Hayden Cullen, a fantastic effort to keep them out! They came again though, getting it to the back of the net on the tenth minute. Oldcastle regrouped though, and a Hayden clearance some minutes later found Jack Pakenham, on to Alex, back to Jack, to Alex again, on via Mikey Timmins, he found Eoin Sheridan who sent her sideways to Callum Keatinge, he found the waiting Mark Halpin who fisted it to the net! All level again! Oldcastle powered on, another score from Mark Halpin, the Killary kick-out intercepted by Conor Russell, on to Eoin Smyth, to Mark and in to Jack Hand, a full back but finding himself up this end of the pitch so he may as well have a go, and he sailed her between the posts for a fine score. More points from Mark and Alex, and more great saves by Hayden Cullen, but the lads went to sleep in the final eight minutes of the half, and between a couple of Oldcastle wides and four points for the opposition, it was all level at 1-06 apiece at the break.

The second half got underway with Killary Emmets in possession, but a dodgy pass was intercepted by Mark Halpin, on to Matt Lynch, to Conor Russell, back to Mark and on to Alex Smith who fired over a great score from outside the D, a two-pointer! A frantic pace of play going on: great work from Sean Garrigan to keep possession for Oldcastle, both sides trading the ball time and again, but a free to Oldcastle, Jack Hand to Jack P, back to Jack H, to Mark and on to Callum who was definitely in for a goal this time, but was brought down, a free awarded, and converted by Mark. Killary Emmets added on a free themselves straight after, a two-point game again. Killarys were putting on the pressure but great work from Paul Lynch and Kyle McEnroe kept them out, while Eoin O’Connell brought renewed energy to the lineout. Good work from Eoin Smyth soon after, play went on and the ball heading to Mark Halpin in a good position, he was fouled, free awarded, Mark converted. The Killary kickout was brought down by Callum Keatinge, a superb catch, on to Mark, back to Callum and he fired her at the goals with the power of a steam train, only to have her hit the crossbar and come back out again! In any normal match Callum would have had at least three goals, but no luck with them tonight! It was 1-10 to 1-07, into the second half of the second half, and we went ten full minutes with no score!

Both sides had chances, both sides missed, and at this stage it was still anyone’s game. A great game of football ongoing despite the lack of scores, but then, in the 28th minute, Killary Emmets fired over a two-pointer, bringing the gap back to a single point, and putting renewed urgency on everyone! They were now chasing the game to win; Oldcastle trying desperately to stay ahead. Hayden Cullen’s kickout found Mikey Timmins, on to Mark Halpin, who was busted while waiting to catch her, awarded a free, tipped on to Callum Keatinge, and this time there was no denying him, forget about goals, a point will do; he sailed her up and over, a superb point, and the last score of the game, though we didn’t know that just yet, a lovely score to put Oldcastle two ahead now. Thirty-one minutes gone, and the ref played on for another two: again, both sides had chances to score, but neither took them, and when the final whistle finally blew, it was on a score of Oldcastle 1-11, Killary Emmets 1-09!

U15 Football League Division 2 Final

Oldcastle 4-10 Skryne 3-07

A super team performance from the Oldcastle U15s in Simonstown saw them lift the U15 Division 2 Cup at the expense of old foes Skryne! on Friday evening(19/7/2024). Oldcastle were playing against a stiff breeze, and the opposition had the perfect start, with a goal within a minute, but that was to be the last time they held the lead. A Skryne kickout was secured by Jack Hand, on to Alex Smith, to Eoin Smyth and safely delivered into Mark Halpin’s hands, and dispatched to the back of the net! Game levelled, Oldcastle kicked on with a fine point from Alex Smith. A good intercept from Jack Hand soon after found Eoin Smyth, on to Jack Pakenham, to Callum Keaginge then Alex Smith, back to Eoin then to Alex once more, to Kyle McEnroe, back to Jack, to Alex again, to Eoin O’Connell, on via Zach Smyth who made a great pass to the instigator of the whole movement, Captain Jack Hand, who buried her in the back of the net! A point from Kyle followed, before Skryne finally got another point. They followed that with a couple of wides, but then sent another two over, before Oldcastle got motoring again with an Alex Smith point.

Skyrne looked dangerous near the Oldcastle goals but Hayden Cullen came to the rescue to a super clearance kick which sent the ball back to midfield. Another point and more wides from Skryne, before a great clearance from Eoin Burns made its’ way upfield via numerous players before Eoin Smyth fired her between the posts. It was Charlie Crawley, an U13 player playing a whole age group up, who took the final score of the half, a lovely point to leave it Oldcastle 2-05, Skryne 1-04 at the break.

The second-half got underway with a foul on Callum Keatinge, which Mark Halpin converted, Skryne doing the same minutes later. Skryne took the fight to Oldcastle then, and a great shot on goal was saved by Hayden Cullen, but they got to the rebound and buried her to the net, and straight away were in for another goal, but another super save from Hayden saved Oldcastle’s bacon! They converted the ’45 though, to level the match again, 2-06 apiece. Oldcastle regrouped, held the heads and pushed on: Callum Keatinge was fouled again; Mark Halpin converted. Eoin O’Connell made a great catch straight after and was fouled, Mark converted. An Eoin Smyth intercept was fed on to Jack Pakenham, making great runs, to Jack Hand, playing out of his skin, to Callum Keatinge, to Mark, back to Jack and finally to Charlie Crawley who put her over the bar!

The kickout from that point was brought down by Mark Halpin, on to Eoin O’Connell, he was fouled and Mark converted, four points up now and cruising, before Eoin O’Connell turned over a Skryne attack and got the ball on to Jack Pakenham, he got her in to Charlie Crawley and Charlie planted her in the back of the net! A goal in an U15 Division 2 final for Charlie, good man! Skryne paid the price for their fouling soon after, with a red card, and Oldcastle kept the pressure up, a Jack Hand clearance finding its’ way to the other end of the pitch and on the end of Callum Keatinges’ boot before finding herself in the back of the Skryne net once more, Oldcastle’s fourth goal and the game out of reach now!

Skryne to the credit never gave up, a period of sustained pressure ensued, but the Oldcastle defence were rock solid: TJ Masterson, Paul Lynch and Jack Tynan clearing attack after attack to keep them out. John Smith, Lee Garrigan and Aaron Sheridan came on and kept the Oldcastle ranks fighting in the last quarter, while Enda Fanning came on as goalie and made another few good saves, before the ultimate goalie’s nightmare of a penalty in the dying minutes! Skyrne scored but no matter, the lads were out of sight, and when the final whistle blew it was on a super Oldcastle victory of 4-10 to 3-07, a great result to cap a great run throughout this league.

Well done to all the lads and to coaches Enda Smyth, Ollie Fitzpatrick, Enda Garrigan and Brendan Halpin, and enjoy those pizzas in Ciara’s Candy!

Oldcastle 3-21 Na Fianna 0-08

The Oldcastle minors put on a dazzling display of firepower in the second round of the LM/FM Championship (Div 2) in Millbrook this evening (28/8/2023). Na Fianna were a big, strong looking team, and it was they who started the better, with three points to Oldcastle’s one after five minutes. Ryan Halpin had gotten Oldcastle off the mark with a free, and added another when Rory Crawley was pulled down. Paul Hennessey was in possession of the next ball, on to Tom Lynch, Pat Crawley, to Nathan Gibney, on via Jamie Pakenham, to Ivan Smyth and finally back to Paul who sailed her over to level it. Ryan Halpin added on a fine point from play; Na Fianna came back with one of their own, but that was to be the last time they were in contention.

A Thomas Sheridan ball was moved on to Ryan Halpin at speed, back to Thomas and then to the flying Pat Crawley who fisted it to the back of the net. Nathan Gibney extended the lead, and Pat added another point, Na Fianna then added one of their own. An Oldcastle sideline ball found Pat Crawley, on to Nathan, back to Pat and in to Ivan Smyth who fisted it over the net – unlucky not to get a goal indeed, but taking the point. Oldcastle were really getting into their stride now, and could do no wrong, the next score a superbly kicked point from Ryan Halpin at speed. Good work from Fergal Flynn got the next ball to Pat Crawley for a point, with Ryan adding on another free before the half-time whistle blew, with the teams at Oldcastle 1-10, Na Fianna 0-06.

The second half was totally one-sided, Oldcastle dominating all over the pitch. A beautiful point from Rory Collins got things underway, Ivan Smyth and Paul Hennessey adding points of their own. Na Fianna attacked but the Rory Collins intercept was fed on to Rory Crawley, to Paul Hennessey, on to Pat Crawley, to Ivan, on to Nathan, back to Pat Crawley who was travelling downfield all the while, on to Ryan Halpin and back to the same Pat Crawley who fired her over the bar. A Fergal Flynn intercept on the next attack found Jamie Pakenham, to Thomas Sheridan, to Ivan and finally to Paul Hennessey for yet another score. Cillian Fanning’s kickouts were long and accurate, with James Gibney, Padraig Lynch and Tommy Russell rock solid in defence, while Thomas Sheridan was defence, midfield and forward all in one! Another point from Rory Collins; the resultant kickout was brought down by Ivan Smyth, he caught, turned and fired her straight back over the bar. That was followed by a fantastic point from Paul Hennessey, impossibly high and accurate, sailed over the town-end bar. Na Fianna finally got a scoring chance and went for goal, but Cillian Fanning was ready and saved. The resultant ’45 went over for their first score of the half. They added another soon after, but Oldcastle got back to business, Paul firing over another point, followed by a goal from the speedy Shane Boylan. Good work from Matt Lynch and Conor Russell secured the ball, upfield by way of Tadgh Coyle, to Riain Burke, back to Tadgh, to Fergal Flynn to Paul Hennessey and finally to Rory Collins, a super point, followed by another, to leave the final score Oldcastle 3-21, Na Fianna 0-08. An absolute masterclass in football from the lads tonight, super scoring and play, and a great display from every lad on the pitch.

The third-round match sees the lads play Walterstown on Saturday 16th at Millbrook.
