Congratulations to Oldcastle Ladies GFC on their victory in the Div 1 County League Final that was held this evening (15/08/2021) in Millbrook.
Final Score
Oldcastle 2-11
Simonstown 1-05

It was also a historic weekend for Oldcastle Ladies as they overcome a strong Simonstown team in the Division 1 league final in Millbrook.

Oldcastle 2-11 Simonstown 1-5

On a weekend of excitement for all GAA fans with Mayo’s win over Dublin on Saturday and Meath ladies win over Cork early Sunday, Oldcastle and Simonstown were both hoping to join in on the celebrations. Oldcastle got off to a great start with quick pace in the forwards resulting in an early goal from Sinead Coyle. Great link work in the halfback line between Nadine Wade and Gabriele Krivinskaite and young midfielder, Ciara Gilsenan who had an outstanding game throughout, helped get points from Lisa Mullen and Gemma Galligan putting Oldcastle ahead 1-04 to no score at the first water break. Super defending in the backs from Oldcastle’s Orla Smith covering areas all over the pitch kept the pressure on the Simonstown forwards with their first score only coming on the 25th minute of the first half, followed by another point shortly after. A second goal from Coyle and a point from the speedy Nicole Smith led to a half time score of 2-06 to 0-02.

Simonstown started to come to life in the second half. Super sub Tara Berigan for Simonstown scored a fine goal for her side, but there was never any doubt that the home team would stay on top. There was great battling between Elaine Plunkett and Jackie Shiels, two work colleagues, with Plunkett coming out on top in this match helping Oldcastle stay the dominant team throughout the game. With hard work from the midfielders, solid work by all defenders and some great saves and kick-outs from goalie Jane Browne, Oldcastle made it very hard for Simonstown to get scores on the board. Oldcastle pulled away in the last quarter with substitutes being made on both sides, Joanna Byrne replacing Smith and scoring a tremendous point in the closing stages of the game to finish off the victory for Oldcastle. Unfortunately, towards the end of the match Niamh Cassidy of Simonstown picked up an injury and we would like to wish her a speedy recovery.

Oldcastle would also like to congratulate their teammate Bridgetta Lynch and the Meath Ladies team on their incredible win against Cork in the All-Ireland semi-final and wish them all the luck in the final!

Oldcastle team: Jane Brown, Lisa Brennan, Elaine Plunkett, Eimear Hetherton, Gabriele Krivinskaite, Orla Smith, Nadine Wade, Ciara Brown (captain), Ciara Gilsenan, Florence Smith, Nicole Smith (0-2), Gemma Galligan (0-1), Áine Bennett, Lisa Mullen (0-5), Sinead Coyle (2-1). Subs: Chloe McNamee (0-1) for Coyle, Joanna Byrne (0-1) for Smith, Ciara Delaney for Galligan, Ruth McDonnell for Wade, Aobhin Timmins for Mullen,

Emma Healy, Aisling O’Connell, Eimer Delaney, Rachel Halpin, Karen Cadden, Niamh McKenna and Emily McCann.

Referee: Yvonne Brady

Some twenty years ago it was realised that the pitch there wasn't sufficient anymore , with the club growing and the establishment of Oldcastle Ladies Gfc. Years of planning and hard work from all involved in the club at that time led to land at Millbrook being purchased, and a beautiful pitch and clubhouse being developed there, and officially opened in May 2010. For the past decade Millbrook has been an invaluable addition to the club: a main pitch to be proud of, with the Gilson Park also in regular use. The club continues to grow however, with over 200 juvenile players plus our Senior teams requiring regular training and matches. Once again we found the pitches under pressure! The solution we are now working on is a fantastic new juvenile pitch at Millbrook. Once open, it will facilitate training, Go-Games, blitzes and more! We are also extending the existing walking track to go around the new pitch, including hills and a beautiful section alongside the river Inny. The club are also planning to landscape the pitch-surrounds as a Bio-Diversity garden: both to help the local wildlife and encourage habitats, and as an educational facility for our children to learn more about their environment. The aim is that Millbrook will be more than just a GAA pitch: it will be a beautiful place to come and take a walk or sit and chat, as well as watching or playing our beloved game! A huge thank you to every one of you who are helping us in this fundraiser. 24 teams of 24 will walk round Millbrook for 24 hours on August 1st and 2nd. We couldn't complete this project without your help. We are forever grateful to everyone who takes part, and to everyone who donates. We will do you proud with our development.
Jane and Ciara Browne being presented with the Meath Ladies SFC Cup at Skryne

Oldcastle 1-9 Boardsmill 1-6

Six years after winning the Intermediate championship, Oldcastle were crowned Masita Meath Ladies Senior champions on Saturday evening last, after a dominant display against a gallant Boardsmill side. Despite being underdogs in the view of some observers, in front of a crowd of 900 spectators Oldcastle deservedly came out on top on a scoreline of 1-9 to 1-6.

In what was always going to be an intriguing match between the beaten finalists from the previous 2 years, Oldcastle started brightly with the opening point inside 3 minutes from the boot of their excellent full-forward Joanna Byrne. Boardsmill responded with a well-taken point from full-forward Laura Dempsey, after some good work on the left wing from all-Ireland Camogie winner Caroline Quinn. Byrne restored Oldcastle’s advantage from the restart, this time cutting in from the right side and finishing a collective team effort from close range.

Boardsmill’s next scores came from a brace of pointed frees from Dempsey. In between these, Sarah O’Reilly delivered the score of the game as she sent over a superb pointed free from the 13 metre line, 5 metres in from the right touchline. Boardsmill took the lead for the first time in the game with a point from play from the influential Quinn in the 16th minute. This began a spell where Boardsmill gained the upper hand in the game, but could only muster a single point from another Dempsey free by the time the first half came to an end. Oldcastle stayed in touch during this time with another free from O’Reilly, so going to the break a point in arrears 0-4 to 0-5.

The half-time team talk from manager Laura Harrison seemed to have the desired effect as Oldcastle came out of the blocks strongly in the 2nd half and began to win all the key battles across the park. They were back on level terms within 2 minutes and after 12 minutes had pushed the game to a 2 point gap for the first time, all 3 points coming from frees by O’Reilly. Oldcastle’s defence was also rock solid at this stage with full back Eileen Rahill making some very impressive surges downfield when the opportunity arose. The crucial moment of the game came in the 45th minute as Bridgetta Lynch, operating superbly as sweeper, intercepted a Boardsmill attack. From the resultant passage of play, Áine Bennett sent a cross-field ball with pinpoint accuracy to the unmarked Byrne who finished calmly to the net. This opened up a 5 point gap and in truth there was no way back for Boardsmill at this stage.

Byrne made it a 6 point game in the 50th minute before Quinn reduced the deficit again to 5 with a point for Boardsmill. 6 minutes from full-time, Boardsmill seemed to give themselves some hope with a fortuitous goal from substitute Laura Griffin but in reality this just put a better gloss on the scoreline. Oldcastle showed a steely determination to close out the game over the final 5 minutes with player of the match Joanna Byrne sending over the final score in the final minute to seal a deserved 1st senior championship for the north Meath team.

Great credit goes to their management team of Harrison, Martin O’Neill and Paddy Gilsenan, especially having played league football from Division 2 this year. Asked about Oldcastle’s success in this year’s campaign, Harrison credited the team with hard work throughout the year and the determination & belief to never lose sight of the end goal.

Oldcastle go on to contest the Leinster senior championship semi-final against the much fancied Foxrock Cabinteely side this Saturday 14th October at 3pm in Bray Emmets GAA ground. After this display however, Oldcastle just might feel capable of causing an upset to the form book and maintain the strong progress that Meath Ladies football has made already this year.
