Cavan 1-12 Dublin 1-10

Cavan retained the Gerry Reilly Cup in a keenly fought final of the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Final played on Sunday evening in Millbrook, Oldcastle before a large crowd. Scores were hard to come by in the opening period, but it was Dublin who were creating the better chances. Dublin’s shot on goal required a great save by Cameron Smart in the Cavan goals which resulted in a 45. Cavan were unlucky with a shot off the post that looked like they would have the opening score. Dublin were awarded a free in the 12th minute that had been moved forward for the opening score of the game and converted by Adam Byrne for a point. Dublin had kicked a second ball into the goalkeeper’s hands before Anthony Quinn got Dublin’s second point.
Sean Martin pulled one back for Cavan from a converted free in the 18th minute for their opening score.
Dublin continued their dominance in this period with 3 unanswered points. (Adam Byrne (2f) and Darragh Warnock). A Sean Martin converted free for Cavan left 3 between the sides.
A high ball into the square was finished to the Dublin net by Seanie Keoghan to have the sides level in the 29th minute. This seemed to lift the Cavan team and they added 2 points from Sean Martin and Cian McGovern.
Dublin fought back, but they were gain thwarted by the Cavan ‘keeper with another fantastic save blocked out for a 45 that could have restored the lead before the break.
H/T: Cavan 1-4 Dublin 0-5
It was Cavan that were quick out of the blocks and added 3 points to their tally. (Seanie Keoghan (2) and Sean Martin). Dublin were again denied a goal by yet another incredible save by Cameron Smith blocked out for a 45. Adam Byrne converted 2 frees to narrow the gap between the sides . Points were exchanged, Cian McGovern for Cavan and Anthony Quinn for Dublin’ before Dylan Molloy restored Cavan’s lead to 4 points.
Dublin’s Conor Kinsella brought Dublin right back into it with a terrific goal. Darragh Warnock converted a free for a point to have the sides level again in the 48th minute. A Gavin Donoghue point put Cavan ahead again, but Dublin responded with an Anthony Quinn point to make the sides level yet again. Seanie Keoghan restored Cavan’s lead with a point and added to by Sean Martin to put 2 between the sides.
Dublin did have scoring chances and had 3 wides before the Cavan defence blocked their attempt on goal out for a 45. It looked like we were going to have extra time as Dublin had more chances, but the Cavan defence held strong to claim the Gerry Reilly Cup for the third time in a row.
There is not a doubt that very many of the players from both sides will go on to represent their county at the highest level such was the standard on display.
The Dublin team provided a guard of honour for the Cavan team as they made their way to the presentation which was very much appreciated by all present.

They were many from both sides in contention for ‘Man of the match’ and including the Cavan ‘keeper (had to be the real hero for his saves), but the award went to Cavan’s Sean Martin, who had made a huge contribution to Cavan’s victory. The presentation of the award was made by Andre McGivney (Gerry’s sister).

Cavan’s Captain, Killian Brady was presented with the Gerry Reilly Cup by Claire Reilly (Mother of Gerry) and Andre McGivney (Gerry’s sister) after the match.

Louth 5-14 Longford 2-1
A blistering first quarter by Louth in the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Shield Final (3rd placed teams from the ’round robin’ section) played in Millbrook, Oldcastle on Saturday afternoon made the result never in doubt. Tristan Knowles set the ball rolling for Louth with a goal, though it was a ball that should have been cleared out by the Longford defence. Louth added 2 quick points before Shane Mathews got their second goal. Louth were not finished and had 3 more unanswered points and then yet another goal by Ciaran Keenan. They were leading 3-6 to 0-0 before Longford got their first score from a free by Aidan McGuire in the 16th minute.
This seemed to settle Longford a bit and they added 2 points (James Shields & Dylan Farrell). Points ere exchanged before Longford had a great goal chance wide of the post. At the other end Louth’s Tristan Knowles got their 4th goal giving them a huge lead at the break.

H/T: Louth 4-8 Longford 0-4

A more determined Longford in the second half were playing much better. A goal coming off the post from a 45 and finished to the net by Ronan Lynch gave them a much needed lift. Dylan Farrel’s goal in the 54th minute after a good spell by Longford had them trailing by 7 points(4-12 to 2-11). But Louth’s 5th goal by Shane Mathews in the 55th minute put an end to Longford’s revival.
Overall Louth proved to be much to strong on the day.

Meath 1-14 Westmeath 1-10
Westmeath made a terrific start in the Gerry Reiily U-16 FT Plate Final (for the Group runner-ups) played in Oldcastle on Friday evening and played in lovely conditions. They were quick on the board with an Adam Gilbride point and followed up with a Sam Maxwell goal. Indeed they could have been up by more, but Shane Allen’s goal attempt was off target and wide of the post. Meath did have 2 attempts for points, but they too were off target. Colin Murphy pointed for Westmeath and they seemed to be in complete control and leading by 5 points that could have been more.
A terrific Meath move right down the field was finished to the Westmeath net by Craig Munnelly. This settled Meath more into the game. A Shane Walsh pointed free in the 12th minute had just one between the sides. John Tumelty pointed for Westmeath before Meath registered 3 unanswered points (Patrick Matthews, Jack O’Connor & Jordan Morris) to take the lead for the first time.
It was great football with the sides drawn level on another 2 occasions with some fantastic points from both sides leaving the sides at 1-6 each. Craig Munnelly regained the lead with a fine point after a terrific move.
Play was held up in the last minute of the half as Westmeath’s, Sam Maxwell had to retire injured. Meath did have 3 chances to score, but it was Jack O’Connor that converted one of them for a point.
H/T: Meath 1-8 Westmeath 1-6
John Tumelty got the opening score of the second half when he pointed to leave the minimum between the sides. It was Meath that were creating more scoring opportunities and points from Jordan Morris, Jack O’Connor and Patrick Mathews stretched rtheir lead to 4 points. Another terrific move by Westmeath downthe field wasrewarded with a fine point. A quickly taken 45 pass was pointed by Meath’s Eoin Martin.
Westmeath’s, John Tumelty reduced the gap to 3 points in the 47th minute. Indeed Westmeath should have narrowed the gap further, but failed to make use of the scoring chances. Meath’s, Sean Ryan’s point helped to restore Meath’s advantage at this stage.
Westmeath were down to 14 men, but despite this they fought bravely, with only points exchanged before the final whistle. It wasa terrific game of football with some fantastic displays of all that is good in gaelic football from both sides. It was a treat for all present to watch it.

Meath’s, Patrick Matthews got the ‘Man of the match’ award in a game with so many in contention for it from both sides.

Dublin 2-12 Monaghan 1-15
What a terrific game of football that all present were treated to in the last of the ’round robin’ games in the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT played on Sunday evening in Oldcastle. A draw between Monaghan and Dublin was a fitting result, though it was Monaghan that had more chances of claiming victory. Dublin had the advantage of the wind in the first half and were off target on their first 2 scoring chances. Monaghan too, had a shot wide before Tiernan Duffy got the opening point of the game in the 6th minute and he followed up quickly with another point.
Andrew McCaul went on a terrific run before finishing to the Monaghan net to give Dublin the lead.

A Sean Treanor point in the 12th minute had the sides level followed up by a Tiernan Duffy point to regain the lead for Monaghan. Eanna McCarney pointed for Dublin to level the sides again.

A terrific Monaghan move saw Tadgh Kirk O’Callaghan finish to the Dublin net. 3 successive points from Dublin had the sides level yet again. Dublin had a great goal attempt saved by the Monaghan ‘keeper before Sam Jones’s point had Dublin ahead again.
Monaghan had chances with Ryan O’Neill’s point attempt off the post and then had two others into the goalie’s hands, which might have been scores.

Monaghan were on target for 3 successive points (Pauric O’Brien, Tadgh Kirk O’Callaghan and Tiernan Duffy) for a 2 point lead. Stephen Braiden O’Byrne pointed for Dublin just before the break to leave the minimum between the sides.
H/T: Monaghan 1-7 Dublin 1-6
On the resumption Monaghan stretched their lead with 3 unanswered poits by Tiernan Duffy. Substitute, Aidan Kearney was making his presence felt and pointed for Dublin. Dublin had a shot blocked out for a 45 and Lennon Bracken pointed from the resultant free kick. Monaghan powered back to add 3 more points to give them a 5 point lead,
Dublin fought back and when Conor Kinsella got Dublin’s second goal they were really fired up. They went on to score 4 points without reply to take a 2 point lead. Monaghan did have a great chance, but their attempt was into the goalie’s hands again.
The game was intense with both sides giving their all, but it was Monaghan who got the last scores from Tiernan Duffy (1f) to have the sides level. Monaghan went all out for a winner, but the Dublin defence held strong.
It was a great game and a credit to both sides with great movement and tackling. A lot of players were in contention for the ‘Man of the match’ award, such was the standard.

A devastating start by Cavan made it very difficult for Wicklow in the last of the ’round robin’ matches of the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT played in Oldcastle on Saturday evening. Cavan were making sure of booking their place in this year’s Cup Final from the throw in. Their blistering start saw them score 4 goals with just over 3 minutes on the clock. A pair each from Seanie Keoghan and Cian McGovern that all involved great movement from team support. Cavan added 4 unanswered points to their tally making it very difficult to make a fight of it for Wicklow. Wicklow’s James Hedderman got their first score in the 20th minute. They had a terrific goal chance straight after, but the shot was wide of the post. Gavin Brady got another point for Cavan before Wicklow scored 3 points on the trot. Wicklow did have another goal attempt that was blocked by the defence. However it was Cavan that was converting their scoring opportunities. Cian McGovern’s third goal just before the break was making life even tougher for Wicklow.

H/T: Cavan 5-7 Wicklow 0-4Despite all the changes made by Cavan, they continued with their domination in the second half with goals by Cian McGovern, Naoise McKenna and Thomas Smith. They were also able to add 11 points to Wicklow’s 3 points. In fairness to Wicklow, they never gave up, but they knew they were up against a team on fire and with the ambition to retain the Gerry Reilly Cup.

Cavan withstood a late Meath fightback to claim victory over Meath in the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT played in Millbrook, Oldcastle on Sunday evening. Cavan had the wind in the first half, but it was Meath to score first with a point by Eoin Martin after a great Meath move. Eoin Martin was there again to finish to the Cavan net. Meath added 2 points to their tally by the 9th minute. Meath failed to score again in the half. Cavan got the upper hand from then and opened their account with a Sean Martin point. Cavan’s shot on goal was blocked out for a 45, but they responded with a Seanie Keoghan point. On the 18th minute Cavan were right back in it with a fisted goal by Kevin Curtis to leave just a point between the sides. Meath’s Nathan Dunne had his goal attempt blocked out for a 45, which Meath failed to convert. A converted free by Sean Martin had the sides level for the first time. Cavan went on to dominate the last 10 minutes by adding 4 unanswered point, and at the same time having 4 wides.
H/T: Cavan 1-7 Meath 1-3
On the restart Jordan Morris got Meath’s second goal to bring them back into the game, but Cavan responded with a Sean Martin point and the first of Seanie Keoghan’s goals. Meath’s goal attempt went wide of the post before Nathan Dunne reduced the gap to 4 points between the sides. Another Meath attempt on goal was saved by the ‘keeper and out for a 45. 2 more Meath points had the margin down to 2 points. Eoin Martin’s goal attempt hit off the post which could have had Meath in the lead if converted. Meath scoredd 2 further points to have the sides level for the second time.
Cavan’s, Seanie Keoghan put them in the driving seat with 2 goals on the trot. Patrick Lynch folllowed up with a point to put Cavan up by 7 points in the 50th minute. Points from Patrick Mathews and Jordan Morris (f) helped to reduce the gap, but Cavan caught Meath out and Sean Martin scored Cavan’s 5th goal.
Meath put all the pressure on Cavan in the closing minutes and added 3 unanswered points before Jordan Morris’s goal had the gap down to just 2 points. Well into injury time Barry O’Connell got the final score to have the minimum between the sides.
Cavan were able to hold out for a deserved win on the night. It was a great game to watch and both teams will have learned a lot from the game played at a hectic pace.

Westmeath 1-16 Monaghan 0-10
Monaghan certainly took advantage of the strong wind in the opening period of their game against Westmeath in the Gerry Reilly U-16 Ft played in Oldcastle on Saturday afternoon, They had 4 fine points on the board from 4 seperate scorers before Westmeath’s Sam Maxwell point. Padraig Hughes added 2 points to Monaghan’s tally before Shane Coughlan found the Monaghan net after a great move by John Tumelty. 2 more Westmeath points gave them the lead for the first time. Points were exchanged twice to give Westmeath the lead at the break.
H/T: Westmeath 1-6 Monaghan 0-8
John Tumelty pointed on the restart, but 2 converted frees by Ryan O’Neill had the sides level again. However they turned out to be Monaghan’s last and only scores of the half. Westmeath added 5 unanswered points to go 5 up and were making much better use of wind advantage. Monaghan had 2 great opportunities of a goal foiled by a great Westmeath ‘keper and defence, which turned out to have a major bearing on the result.
Westmeath went on to add 4 more points before the final whistle for a deserved victory..
It was a terrific game, played at a hectic pace and full committment from both teams. We were treated to a great game of football from both sides.

Louth 2-12 Wicklow 2-4
Louth’s dominance in the last quarter saw them with a comfortable victory over Wicklow in the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT played in Oldcastle on Saturday afternoon. There was little between the sides for much of the game, but Wicklow did not take advantage of the strong blustery wind in the first half. On 24 minutes Louth were leading by 0-3 to 0-1 Jack Dune’s goal for Wicklow gave them the lead for the first time. They were creating the scoring chances, but were off target on 7 occasions (including a goal chance). Louth’s Thomas Clarke pointed to have the sides level at the break.
H/T: Louth 0-4 Wicklow 1-1
Thewind was more straight down the field at the start of the second half and Shane Mathews was on target for 2 points on the trot. Wicklow were unlucky with a shot wide off the post before they regained the lead with a Daniel Ging point and a Jack Manley goal. A Jack Dune converted free had them up by 3 points at this stage.
When Daniel Morgan got Louth’s first goal, it seemed to help raise their game. They were able to tag on 5 unanswered points before Tristan Knowles got their second goal. There was no way back for Wicklow, though they never gave up.
Before the game, a minute’s silence was observed for the memory of David Deanes (R.I.P.). David’s brother, Jordan, is a member of this year’s Wicklow U-16 Panel

Dublin 5-16 Longford 1-9
Dublin had a gale wind behind them in the first half of the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT game played on Friday evening in Oldcastle. Their start matched the conditions with 1-2 on the scoreboard over Longford within 4 minutes. A fisted point by Andrew McCaul was quickly followed by a converted free by John Foley and a goal from Sam Jones. Dublin went on to lead by 2-4 by the 15 minute before Dylan Farrell got Longford’s first score from a converted free.
Dylan Farrell then found the Dublin net and it looked like Longford were back in the game especially playing against the strong wind.
However Dublin took control again with 2 unanswered points before a great Dublin move was finished to the Longford net by Stephen Braiden O’Byrne. Longford’s only other score of the half was a converted free by Dylan Farrell.

H/T: Dublin 3-9 Longford 1-2

The wind might not have been as strong in the second half, but conditions were made much worse by the heavy rain. Dublin got the opening point before 2 successive points from Aidan McGuire (1f). James O’Connell’s goal for Dublin added to their already huge lead.
Longford never gave up, but it was always an uphill battle against a physically stronger team.

Dublin have set out a marker that they are determined to regain the Gerry Reilly Cup.
