Cavan 2-12 Dublin 0-8
Cavan proved too strong for Dublin in the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Cup Final played on Sunday evening (26 July) in Millbrook, Oldcastle before a large crowd. They meant business from the start in their efforts to retain the cup and got the dream start with a point from Oisin Pierson and a goal from James Smith in the opening minutes.
Dublin hit back with 3 unanswered points from Richie English (f), James Doran and Eoin O’Dea to leave the minimum between the sides. But it was Cavan who were now creating all the chances. Cavan recorded 4 wides before Oisin Pierson scored 3 points on the trot.
The Cavan ‘keeper, Gary O’Rourke, made a great save on Richie English’s goal attempt that he pushed out for a 45. Dublin failed to convert the 45 for a score, while Cavan’s Oisin Pierson responded by pointing from a free.
By the 21st minute it was Dublin’s turn to be off target with 3 successive wides. A Rurai Curran point put Cavan up by 6 points.

Dublin were awarded 2 successive 45’s and Richie English converted one for a point to close the scoring of the first half.
H/T: Cavan 1-6 Dublin 0-4
Another converted free by Oisin Pierson almost straight away from the re-start extended the Cavan lead. It was Cavan who were dominating at this stage and their defence were on top.
By the 40th minute, Cavan had added 3 points and a goal (Cormac Wall) to lead 2-10 to 0-4. Cormac Timoney was black carded in the 42nd minute, but it did not seem to trouble Cavan.
Dublin did have a great chance for a goal, but it was blasted wide of the post. Dublin added 4 points to Cavan’s 2 points by the full time whistle. In this period Cavan had 2 other players black carded, but there was no way back for Dublin.

Cavan’s Ryan Coyle was presented with the Millbrook Food Market ‘Man of the match’ award by Dermot Monaghan (Oldcastle GFC)

Overall an impressive team display by Cavan who deserved their victory and have a lot they can build on for the future.

Monaghan 2-11 Meath 0-6
Monaghan’s dream start made it an uphill battle for Meath’s split squad in the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Shield Final played in awful weather conditions on Sunday afternoon (26 July) in Millbrook, Oldcastle. The result never looked in doubt though Meath tried hard.
A Monaghan point and quickly followed by two Robbie McAlister goals in the opening minutes of the game set them up for victory. The second goal came after a mix up in the Meath goalmouth. Liam Shaw pointed in the 9th minute for Meath’s opening score. Cormac O’Connell and Robbie McAlister points put Monaghan up by 2-3 to 0-1.
Meath then had 3 unanswered points by the 17th minute. However they failed to score again in the half. They did have opportunities, but quite a few attempts of a score ended up in the Monaghan goalie’s hands.
Monaghan went on to add 4 points to their tally before the break despite having registered 4 wides in this period.

H/T: Monaghan 2-6 Meath 0-4

Meath failed to score from frees on the restart. Conditions were difficult with the heavy rain. Despite the adverse conditions, Monaghan were on target with points from Robbie McAlister and Sean Burns. Liam Shaw again got Meath’s first score of the second half in the 49th minute. Both teams had made whoesale changes for the second half, but it was still Monaghan who were dominating the play.

Monaghan’s, Conor Doyle was presented with the Millbrook Food Market ‘Man of the match’ award by Dermot Hawdon (Oldcastle GFC)

Monaghan could have been strong contenders for the Cup Final had earlier results gone their way. No doubt they will be a force in the future. The scoreline does not show the valliant effort of the Meath team who have potential.

Monaghan Captain, David Hanley was presented with the Gerry Reilly Shield Trophy by Dermot Monaghan (Oldcastle GFC) after the game.

Meath 4-13 Louth 2-8
Meath stormed to victory over Louth in the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Plate Final when they blitzed the Louth goal early in the second half. The game played on Saturday evening in Millbrook, Oldcastle in ideal conditions was very free flowing with great movement from both sides.
A fantastic run by Louth’s James O’Reilly opened the scoring with a well rewarded point. Ferghal Malone made it 2 points for Louth before points from Darragh Nolan and Brian Dowling had the sides level. Meath by the 12th minute were 2 points ahead and John Gallagher scored 2 points to have the sides level again. Louth saw their chance of a goal kicked out to the sideline by the Meath ‘keeper, Sean Hogan.
Meath were creating chances and seemed to be going for goals when points might have been available, but the Louth defence were holding them out. A John Gallagher converted free for a point regained the lead for Louth.
Darragh Nolan pointed from a free to have the sides level yet again. Neil Byrne punched over for a point in the 24th minute and Meath then registered the only other score of the half.

H/T: Meath 0-7 Louth 0-5
On the restart, Conal Ahearne pointed to stretch Meath’s lead. Louth then had chances, but were off target before Conor Loughran pointed to narrow the gap.
But the the turning period of the game was when Conal Ahearne pointed and then got Meath’s first goal after a pass from Tom Fadden. This was quickly followed up by a point (Neil Byrne) and 2 goals (Brian Dowling) which had Meath in the driving seat to lead 2-10 to 0-6.
Louth did not give up and responded with the first of Leonard Gray’s 2 goals. In the 54th minute, Meath were down to 14 with the dismissal of Daniel Comiskey (2 Yellows). Despite this the Millbrook Food Market ‘Man of the match’ award winner, Conal Ahearne got Meath’s 4th goal.

Presentation of the Millbrook Food Market ‘Man of the match’ award to Conal Ahearne by Eddie O’Reilly

Louth did not give up and got the final scores of the game with Leonard Gray’s second goal and a Padraig Cunningham point.

A very entertaining game to watch with end to end plays and some great defensive displays especially from the Meath backs.

After the game, Meath captain, Adam Murphy was presented with the Plate trophy by Leo Halpin (Oldcastle GFC)

Gerry Reilly U-16 FT 2015
This year’s Gerry Reilly U-16 FT comes to an exciting finale this weekend with all 3 finals taking place. No doubt we’ll see a lot of players in action who could lift the Sam Maguire in the future!
The Gerry Reilly Cup Final draws this year’s tournament to a close on Sunday evening (26 July @ 7.30 pm) and promises to be a fantastic game between the two group leaders, Cavan and Dublin.
Both teams showed great skill and enthusiasm on their paths to the final. Coupled with this, Cavan are defending champions, while Dublin were champions the previous year. In last year’s final, Cavan came out on top over Dublin, which adds more spice to this year’s final.
In the ‘round robin’ we were treated to fantastic displays and scoring by both teams and no doubt we’ll have more on Sunday evening in the final.

The Gerry Reilly Plate Final takes place on Saturday evening (25 July @ 7.30 pm) between the Group runner-ups, Louth & Meath.
Louth had a big win over Westmeath last weekend and will be all out to win the Plate. Louth also had a one point win over Meath in Group B.

Meath have done well having to play with a split squad (2 teams) making up for a late withdrawal in the tournament. They will be all out to turn the tables on Louth this time.

The Gerry Reilly Shield Final takes place on Sunday afternoon (26 July @ 3.00 pm) between Meath and Monaghan (finished 3rd in their groups). Monaghan will be putting it up to Meath after their big win over Wicklow at the weekend and will be buoyed up by their Seniors win over Donegal.
Meath will be up for the double having defeated Monaghan earlier with their split squad, but will have their work cut out by a much improved Monaghan.

Monaghan advanced to the Shield final with this comprehensive win over Wicklow in round 3 of the Gerry Reilly Cup played in windy and wet conditions at Millbrook Oldcastle.

Monaghan 6-24 Wicklow 1-6

Before the game there was a minutes silence for the late Sean O’Reilly, brother of Eddie, PRO for the Gerry Reilly Cup tournament.

Monaghan played against the elements in the first half but that did not prevent them from working up a substantial half time lead.

Corner forward Sean Burns tormented the Wicklow rearguard for the opening thirty minutes. The Garden County boys were first on the scoreboard with a Sean Branagan point but between the 5th and 20th minute the Farney boys had opened a 2-3 to 0-1 gap, the goals coming within a minute of each other from the very talented Burns. Wicklow fired over three points without reply from Cillian Galligan, Ross Coogan and Branagan to narrow the gap but Monaghan finished out the half the stronger. Burns got his third goal and points from Robbie McAlister and Burns gave them a commanding 3-6 to 0-4 interval lead.

With the wind on their backs it was all one way traffic towards the Wicklow goal for the opening 20 minutes of the second half. Monaghan added 1-9 without reply in that period. When Sean Burns hit his 4th goal on the 10th minute the writing was on the wall for Wicklow. The Garden County had to wait till the 20th minute for their opening score of the half. Padraig O’Toole goaled from a close in free. But there was no let up on the Monaghan attack. Half back Conor Doyle and centre forward David Hanley netted in the closing stages to seal a comfortable win for the Ulster county.

Monaghan: Tomas Marron, Tommy Croakin, Karl McMenamin, Oran Martin, Conor Doyle 1-2, Josh Walsh, Jack Gormley 0-1, Padraig Meehan, Hugh McGinn 0-1, Oisin Gleeson, David Hanley 1-4, Barry Kieran, Cormac O’Connor, Robbie McAlister 0-5, Sean Burns 4-4. Meath’s split squad proved to be no match for Dublin in the Rd.3 game of the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT played in Millbrook, Oldcastle on Sunday evening. Dublin had a lightening start with a Richie English goal just after 12 seconds. He added a pointed free into the 3rd minute of play. Tom Fadden got 2 points (1f) for Meath.
Ross McGarry pointed for Dublin. Dublin had 2 attempts on goal pushed out for a 4, which was converted for a point by Richie English. Points were then exchanged. It was Meath’s turn to have an attempt on goal, but the shot was off target. Meath failed to convert 2 frees which were again wide of the target. Points were again exchanged just before the break.

H/T: Dublin 1-6 Meath 0-4

A Tom Fadden converted free on the re-start reduced the gap to 4 points. But then Dublin got the upper hand by adding 6 unanswered points, Meath’s Sean Blackwell’s point was cancelled out by Richie English’s point (f). Conal Ahearne got Meath’s final score from a pass off a 45 free.
Meath were throwing caution to the wind, but there was no stopping Dublin who went on to add 2 goals (Daniel Brennan & Ross McGarry (penalty) and a point to their final scoreline.
