O’Mahony’s on top in opening game of the AFL
Navan O’Mahonys 2-13 Oldcastle 0-06
Oldcastle Seniors got their 2019 AFL Div.1 campaign off to a chilly start on Sunday morning in a freezing Paddy O’Brien Park. Navan O’Mahonys were two points up before a fine Robbie Farrelly free put Oldcastle on the scoreboard. Two more from Farrelly levelled the match for what was to be the last time. O’Mahonys put four unanswered points on the board before Oldcastle fought back. However just before the break a ball from way out dropped in over the Oldcastle keeper’s head to boost the opposition, and leave it 0-04 to 1-09 at the break.
The second half saw Oldcastle battle on, but O’Mahonys proved the stronger. However the Oldcastle panel was much younger, with many stalwarts injured and with five players making their senior debut today. It is also the first time in five years that Oldcastle have been in Division 1, and the team will build on the experience.
