Seniors back on track in the league
Oldcastle 3-17 Kilmainhamwood 0-15
Oldcastle got back to winning ways when they traveled to Kilmainhamwood for their AFL Divison 3 Round 7 clash on Friday evening last (28 April 2017). Picking up from their disappointing defeat at home to Carnaross, Oldcastle ensured they were coming away with the 2 points on the league table to keep promotion hopes strongly alive.
Oldcastle were first to find their feet when they rallied into a 6 point lead testing the home side’s defence from the first whistle with converted frees from Conor McHugh (1-2) and a well worked attack stroked over from corner forward Paddy Gilsenan.
Further points from Peter Monaghan, Eoin Gilsenan and McHugh stretched the away side’s lead further in front but it appeared that the crucial stages of the game were to be in the final stages in the first half – Oldcastle really surged their threat on the Kilmainhamwood defence through a fine goal from centre forward Jason Scully after an impressive move from Robert Packenham. Oldcastle then raised the green flag a minute later when midfielder Ross Cadden’s deflected effort rolled into the path of full forward Conor Delaney who made no mistake and fired home.
Oldcastle limited the home side to 5 points in the first half leaving the half time score line of 3-6 to 0-5 in favour of Oldcastle.
The second half proved to be more of a battle and Kilmainhamwood rallied their troops and really worked Oldcastle’s defence by hitting over 3 points in quick succession to keep the home side in contention. However Oldcastle got their kicking boots once more and raised the white flag through impressive scoring from Stephen Tierney (0-3), Delaney (0-2) Scully (0-2, 2f) and Packenham (0-1).
The home side however didn’t let Oldcastle’s advantage phase them as they continued to rally on and hit over a further 5 points (2 frees) to keep their scoreboard moving. It was, however, Oldcastle’s night and they settled the contest finally with two converted frees from substitute Kyle Kavanagh (0-2) which left the game with a final scoreline of Kilmainhamwood 0-15, Oldcastle 3-17.
Oldcastle will now aim to continue to maintain their current form with a home clash against joint league leaders Clann na nGael in Millbrook on Friday 5th of May @8pm.
