U-16’s hard earned win over St Mary’s/Slane

Oldcastle 1-16 St Mary’s/Slane 1-13
Oldcastle had Goalie Jack McDonnell Fox to thank as they made it 2 wins from as many outings with a hard earned win over St Mary’s/Slane played on Tuesday evening (4 July 2017) in Donore.
In a game where both sides made a lot of errors early on it was the home side that opened the scoring. Cillian Connell converted two chances for Oldcastle before Colin Hawdon opened his account to leave the score St Marys/Slane 0-2 Oldcastle 0-3 after 9 minutes. Midway though the half Colin Hawdon converted a 45’ to extend Oldcastle’s lead. Having already hit the post twice St Mary’s/Slane finally netted towards the end on the first half to leave the score, St Mary’s/Slane 1-3 Oldcastle 0-8.

The second half was much like the first with both sides missing chances. Pearse Sheridan opened the scoring with his third point of the evening. Darren Connell was doing well in defence and was well supported by Jack Murphy. Colin Hawdon pointed from another 45’ however Oldcastle could not pull clear and with less than 10 minutes left the score was all level. Oldcastle settled themselves with fine scores from Cillian Connell and Pearse Sheridan before Colin Hawdon grabbed a goal. That signalled the home side to lay siege on the Oldcastle goal looking for an all important goal.
Jack McDonnell Fox was in fine form and produced a string of fine saves which included a quick reaction double save and great block just outside his small square. This didn’t stop them trying and Jack was forced into a late finger tip save to secure victory.

Next up is Na Fianna next Tuesday in Millbrook.
