Seniors snatch victory with an injury time long range free

Oldcastle put their stamp on the top end of the Division 3 League table with a highly entertaining clash against joint placed Clann na nGael in a sunny Millbrook on Friday evening last(5 May 2017).

Both teams kicked fine opening scores with well worked moves and it was tit for tat for the first opening 20 mins, Oldcastle scoring through Conor McHugh, Jason Scully, Robert Pakenham, Conor Delaney and CJ Healy. The visitors Clann na nGael eventually pulled away ever so slightly to lead by 3 points at half time however the game was still finely in the balance when the teams went in at half time with a scoreline of 0-9 to 0-6 in favour of the visitors Clann na nGael.

Oldcastle started the second half the strongest by raising the white flag through fine kicking from Stephen Tierney (0-2) Scully and McHugh, The game was set alight on the 48 minute mark when Oldcastle’s double substitution combined and a Kyle Kavanagh assist set up Keith Connell to fire the ball home. However the visitors responded equally and hit the Oldcastle’s net a minute later to give them a 3 point lead with ten minutes to go.

Oldcastle’s reply was just what was required from the home side. Through Peter Monaghan (0-1) and CJ Healy (0-2) they pulled they game back towards the dying stages and through a placed free from midfielder Conor McHugh, the win was snatched at the death by Oldcastle as he struck between the posts and sent Clann na nGael home empty handed.

Oldcastle scored a long range free 2 minutes into injury time to deny 14 man Clann na nGael a draw in this Div 3 league encounter in Millbrook Friday night. Clann na nGael lead for most of the match and were 9 points to 6 ahead at half time despite having a man sent off having enjoyed the backing of a strong wind.When the second half resumed Oldcastle quickly reduced the Clann lead to a point but some great counter attacking produced enough scores to keep the Athboy/Rathcairn lads ahead .With 10 minutes left Oldcastle got a goal to go a point ahead and the game looked up for Clann na nGael,However following some great work from Caoimhin o Griofa and a great pass to cousin Darragh o Griofa the Clann lads scored a great goal which gave them fresh impetus .Oldcastle fought for the equaliser and were rewarded when their corner back fired over the equaliser.Clann na nGael fought to hang on for a draw.Goal keeper Peter Garry make a good save and Clann na nGael looked to attack and get the win.However the Referee awarded a free to Oldcastle with time up the Oldcastle free taker fired over a great long range score to secure the win in what was a great game of football.
