A hard earned for the U-16’s in Dunboyne

Oldcastle 5-10 St Peter’s, Dunboyne 3-14
Oldcastle made the long journey up the M3 worthwhile with a 2 points victory over Dunboyne in this high scoring U-16 Div 3 game played on Tuesday evening (18 April 2017). Dunboyne opened the scoring with a well taken point from a 45. Colin Hawdon was in on goal but his shot was deflected over the bar by the goalie, who required attention to his wrist as a result. Dunboyne settled quickly and were starting to cause issues in the Oldcastle defence however it was Oldcastle’s Aaron Getty who grabbed the first goal of the night. Dunboyne added a brace of points before Colin Hawdon finished to the net for Oldcastle’s second goal. This was quickly followed by a Cillian Hanlon goal however “Hawk Eye” maybe needed to see if the ball had actually crossed the goal line before Cillian toe poked the ball to the net. Dunboyne added another couple of points before Colin Hawdon converted to leave the half time score St Peter’s, Dunboyne 0-7 Oldcastle 3-5.

The half time talk given to Dunboyne had the desired effect as they grabbed their first goal 5 minutes into the second half. This was quickly followed by another goal before Cillian Connell added to the Oldcastle tally. The fast flowing nature of the game lead to end to end play and Dunboyne added a point before Charlie Lynch found himself one on one with the keeper to get Oldcastle’s 4th goal. Joe Lynch was battling well in defence and his hard work resulted in a lot of turnover of possession. Likewise Ciaran Healy was once again been a thorn in the opposition’s attack as his tight marking and knack of always been on at end of the loose ball prevented a number of scores. Aaron Getty coolly slotted home his second and Oldcastle 5th goal of the game. Dunboyne were not to be out done and scored 1-3 without reply to level the game with only minutes remaining. Oldcastle pushed hard knowing that it would be a long drive home without the win and as Colin Hawdon tore through the Dunboyne defence he was fouled when a score was on the cards. Up stepped Cillian Connell who had a quite game given his own recent form but he made no mistake to give Oldcastle the lead. As the darkness fell Dunboyne had one last chance to attack, but the ball broke and found its way to Conor Hetherton who slotted over the bar to secure a hard earned but well deserved victory.
